Export Question

OK, this is probably a retarted question, but I am going to ask anyway... please forgive me. I have a project that I have shot in 24pa squeeze mode and edited in a 24p 16:9 timeline. Everything looks beautiful when I edit. When I simply export a raw .AVI file however, Windows Media Player still plays a squeezed 4:3 image. I checked my export settings, and it is set to 16:9. Is this just something I have to live with since I shot in squeeze mode, or am I missing something stupid.

P.S.: I know that I can compress the file to another format using Cleaner XL and acheive a 16:9 image, but I really wanted to project the raw .AVI at a screening for quality purposes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds to me like a WMP problem. Have you tried watching the footage through any other media players? To make sure its a 16:9 .AVI, import the file back into premiere, and check your aspect ratio, you'll be able to tell. Also, the video properties will be able to tell you the aspect ratio of your file.

I've tried that as well, but the picture is still squeezed... any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you want a letterboxed .avi, then a quick and simple fix for this is to export the project from Premier as an .avi, then open a new Premier Pro project with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Now import the just exported .avi and conform the pixel aspect ratio to 1.2, now you can export the project and it will be letterboxed within the 4:3.

If you want to play the project with Windows Media Player, a quick fix is to make a .wmv from the exported .avi (16x9). Just use Windows Movie Maker (select 16x9 from the options menu under the tools tab) and place the .avi in the time line and then export it as a DV-AVI. This will maintain the correct aspect ratio with minimal degradation.
