Exporing to Quicktime

Hi Everyone,

I've been trying to down-rez a 30 gig quicktime movie (way too big) to something that is of a much more manageable size.

The frame size of the original media is 1920x1080. I am trying to get it to 960x720.

When I go to export it as a Quicktime Movie (NOT using Quicktime Conversion), through custom settings I set the frame size to 960x720. The Aspect Ratio is set to HD (960x720) (16:9).

After doing this, I open up the exported movie in Final Cut and it looks fine. However, when I open it in QuickTime, the image is squeezed to a full screen 4:3 looking aspect ratio.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you very much!

DVCPro HD uses non-square pixels and sometimes QT will not properly display an image that uses non-square pixels. Yer not doing anything wrong it's just QT acting weird.

960/720 = 1.333
4/3 = 1.333
16/9 = 1.777
1280/720 = 1.777

If you're using the DVCPro HD codec at 720 (versus 1080) then it will often say 960x720, but because its the DVCPro HD codec, readers of the codec will interpret it properly as 1280x720 16:9 footage. If you manually just try and create (by adjusting some setting numbers) the same thing, it will likely squeeze into a 4:3 box as what is what you experienced.

cheers.
