Hello everyone. I'm in the need of help from any exp. film makers out there. Long story short, I want to make a short film. I'm a 3D modeler that has made 3d stuff but I want to try something live. I have an outlined script of a story that I would like to do so I have an idea of a short stroy. My problem is that I don't own any hardware (except for computer & software). I have been watching the hollywood camera series, how to light for DV & Film series and random stuff on youtube to try and start learning the basics. But I'm not sure what to start buying? I research so much stuff and then I can't make a decision. I would like to buy a DVX100B then people say you need to get something HD. So then I look @ the camera I am looking at is the Canon XH-A1. And then I think to myself, do I really need this camera to start off with? Why not buy a cheaper camera to start learning and then upgrade. Plus, I still need lights, lenses, filters, some sort of stabilizier, possible dolly track, etc. So, to summerize, this is what I am thinking of purchasing to start with? Let me know what you guys think, please. I know I see allot of times when someone ask something like this, it depends on what you are wanting to make. The only thing I can say at this point is I have an idea in my head to make something of a short film and to start learning.

1 Canon GL2 (used) w/extended warrenty
1 JTL 3K Lighting setup ( 3 1k lights with softbox & barndoors)
2 Boom Stands
1 Home Depot work light (500 watt)
2 Foam Core White & Black (I think thats how it's spelled for bouncing light)
1 XLR adapter
1 external MIC (still researching which one)
1 Indie Dolly Track
1 shoulder support stabilizier
And then things like gloves, clamps, ext. cords.

Hi Hansedr

Very cool that you are wanting to make a movie. I'm hitting that point to after working in corporate video for a few years I'm ready to venture into some narrative work too. Those DVD and stuff are awesome. I love the hollywood camera work DVD's too.

Your list has some good stuff, but in my experience I've found I've made better descisions in purchasing after using a variety of gear. And good gear isnt exactly cheap as you've found out. So here's what I'd do if I were you. Dont buy anything at all. Get in touch with some locals (let us know where you are located and I'm sure you'll find some DVXusers near you). Shoot your film with them with their gear. You'll quickly find out what you do and dont like about certain brands or certain types of gear after using it. Alot of it is personal preference. I dont like softboxes. I'd rather use reflected light. Thats just me. I still use softboxes but its not my go to for a soft light source. Just an example there. And stuff like stabilizers and dollies are cool and can add production value but you can totally shoot a great short without either. Anyways I'm rambling a bit, but if you let us know your location we might be able to help you out and help you keep your money in your wallet until you know exactly what you need.

Hope this helps some.

Jeff
