excessive "lens flare" when using a UV filter

Hey guys,

I have a Tiffen 72mm UV filter that I've been using with my DVX, however I've noticed that with the filter on, I run into problems with "lens flare" much more than with the filter off.

I've tried setting up a shot with intentional lens flare witht the filter on, then remove the filter and the flare disapears.

Is this a common problem with UV filters or is it a problem with my specific tiffen filter. Any ideas?

Thanks

I've got a Tiffen UV and haven't noticed any problems with it.

Maybe it's just a case of light hitting it? Any filter you put on brings the glass further out from the recessed lens...making it easier for light to sneak in from the side.

But I always use an extra sunshade I made, so I haven't run into the problem.

You may want to try something very simple. Try cleaning the filter with a high quality alcohol (91% or better), even a light smearing of grease oil or fingerprint (that you cannot see easily) will cause a single point light source like the sun to flare. I just got new eyeglasses and they gave me a cleaning solution that contains no alcohol. After cleaning I went into the sun and presto . . . flare. I went back to my old Bausch and Lomb cleaning wipes and it was gone. You may also want to take off the filter and clean both sides.
