Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

kinda related...

how much are you at an advantage using the adapter on a DVX100A as opposed to using the in-camera squeeze without the adapter? are you losing much quality with the squeeze by itself or is it just that the adapter pulls in even more image?

i am at the point in thinking where maybe i can live with spending the $800 on some OTHER needed equipment and making it by with the squeeze option instead of using the lens, but if its definitely a big improvement (and i of course do want my stuff looking good) then i would still keep it high on my initial buying plan...

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

I would personally love to get more information on this issue myself. I am not sure if i should go squeeze or lens.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

the ana lense is much sharper for anything wider on the lense. the squeeze mode will probably be sharper for ECU's (extreme close ups) if nothing extra is done for the anamorphic lense. you can do a switch of the lense setup if you like, to do any ecu s, or you can close the iris down a little with the ana lense on to sharpen it up, and use more light(remove nds, or use more light), and get
a good ecu with the anamophic lense on like that.  all in all the ana lense makes you work a little harder, but it really can give the best results in the end.

this topic has been beaten like a horse skeleton  rotting in the dirt, but you can do a search and review all the threads, and testing, and such that will give you the same answer, if your looking for more proof in the pudding.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

The anamorphic lens can definitely deliver higher resolution. The squeeze mode is mathematically limited to 360 lines (or 372, perhaps) but the anamorphic can deliver up to 480.

However, my advice is always: try squeeze mode out first. If you like it, save the $800. Shooting with the anamorphic involves many compromises, whereas squeeze mode involves only one: a loss of potential maximum vertical resolution.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

Speedbump, I shoot with the DVX100's cheesy 16:9, then I'd import it as anamorphic footage. But people here and a friend of mine said the image looked squished. I was concerned because I didn't know if the average person would see it. After my friend said it look squised I decided against that. I went to your entertain.com and your image looked like mine did. Are you going to use those images or what will you do? Just curious.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

when you say cheesy 16:9 are you talking letterbox or the squeeze?

i just played back some "squeeze" footage again on my TV and i dont see any sign of "squishing" whatsoever

The letterbox mode in the DVX100.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

If it looks squished than you probably have the wrong pixel aspect ratio selected for 16x9 or you have the NLE setting to 4x3 output with 16x9 pixel aspect. It was a ***** to get canopus pro coder to render out a 16x9 quicktime that didnt look squished.
Heres the settings i came up with.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

nathyn. letterbox is not anamorphic footage. your setting it wrong. the dvx letterbox, is only 4:3 video with the top and bottom blacked out leaving a 16:9 image in the center. but the actual video INCLUDES THE BLACK PARTS! and is still a 4:3 video. just cause you put some black bars over the top and bottom of your video, it doesnt make the video 16:9. it just makes it so that what you can still see in the center has a 16:9 ratio. if you want to get 16:9 video from the letterbox mode. you can import it as 16:9 but then you need to crop off the top and bottom black bars so that the 16:9 image you can see inside the 4:3 window expans to fill the whole 16:9 window your looking at(this is what squeeze mode on the "a" does in the camera for you). if you want it to look right and not squished you should import it with the right setting of 4:3. or crop it and stretch it so the image actually fills the 16:9 window

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

Here's an example of footage captured with a Panasonic DVX100 and Panasonic's 16:9 anamorphic adapter. There are 2-clips within this one on-line clip. The first was filmed backstage at the Beacon Theater in a rather boring setting with white walls. The second is much more colorful. The first clip was videotaped under practical floresents while the second clip used 1-ARRI 600 fresnel and 2-ARRI 300+ fresnels.

I wanted to conserve file size so I short changed the audio compression and lowered it quite a bit to conserve file size. Sorry if it sounds scratchy.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

Great footage Jonathan!
I just got new DVX100a and Panny anamorphic lense....together they work well together although I wish I had a better way to line up the lens and find some sort of way to put a protective glass cover over the 16:9 lense. When it comes down to it, you've invested at least 3 g's into the camera, and if you plan on the true film look, it's completely worth it to spend the $600-$700 on the lense. I haven't even taken the lense off since I bought it last week. It's zoomable, however it's the clearest when zoomed out completely. Going from a GL2 to this, it's seriously worth the extra cash. When the Century Optics one (72mm thread) arrives (and the ratings are better) then I will just sell my Panny lense on ebay. Get the lense now if you want the extra resolution and the graceful look of film. Got some excellent shots of the Yuba River (even with natural light at 6pm). The quality truely amazes me.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

Thanks for the kudos, Orb. I agree with all of your statements. I too wish the adapter had a thread where I could place a protective glass filter.

Regarding squeeze vs. adapter: If you're outputting to film then use the adapter. If you're not (TV, DVD, VHS), then use squeeze. I think it's that simple.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

I just use the squeeze. None of my work (yet) needs to see celluloid... Footage always amazes people / clients, so i'm happy enough with it for now.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

well for 4:3 output, i don't think squeeze is a good solution unless you like that bruce lee kung fu look...or paula abdul's "promise of a new day" video.

Re: Examples of Anamorphic lens in action

Nathyn, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I've been ranting on other threads.

The footage is as it will be in final distribution, in terms of aspect ratio. The Swanks are a punk/blues/rock band, so their heads are naturally that way. :D

I took a look at that clip again just now, it looks correct to me, and was shot in 4:3 mode with the anamorphic adapter, then rendered in Vegas to 16:9.
