everything washed out but the eyes

The effect I'm looking for is a video version of the effect that was used on the Angel Eyes (movie came out about 4 years ago starring Jennifer Lopez and Jim Caviziel) poster where only Jennifer Lopez's eyes showed, while everything around them was white (washed out). I tried to use the levels effect in Premiere to wash out the face but it washed out the color of the eyes as well. I assume I need to light this shot correctly but my experience with lighting is limited. Any tips?

I haven't seen the effect you are looking for but do you mean desaturated? If so you can use your color corrector to select everything but a specific color to desaturate.

Re: everything washed out but the eyes

Well you could get heavily diffused light to light everything and then get a hard eye light on your subject.

One crazy idea is to shoot through a net??? maybe a stalkings covering the lens with just a thin line or two holes cut out and shoot the eye. HEHE, but it would have to be a tight locked shot.

I dunno. If i think of anything else, I'll post. Good luck.

Re: everything washed out but the eyes

Sounds like you'll have to mask of the eyes. It can be done a few different ways in After Effects or Photoshop. If video, then AE. If photo, then PS. After you get the mask, you can alter the levels in the rest of the photo as you like.

Re: everything washed out but the eyes

Definitely a mask. If you're applying the effect to video then create a mask in AE and adjust at will. If the video has a lot of motion then you will need to "track motion" or "rotoscope". Both are explained in AE help files and tutorials. Good luck!

this is actually WAAAY easier than you would think and you can do it entirely in premiere...

you basically put one copy of the video on one line and then put a copy above it.

you make a mask on the first track, you then do whatever effect you want in premiere to wash out the color etc.

this tutorial uses the example of bluring a soccer players face but it is the exact same concept, just replace persons eyes with where he talks about the players face...in fact i would highly recommend just following his tutorial exactly until you have the concept down.

the best way to do it is to watch the tutorial on www.wrigleyvideo.com

Eyes!
I do so on a pro music video.
1. white ballance (basic)
2. have good lighting
3. zoom in on the eyes and crank the ires untile you can only see the eyes. (keep in mind, the eye color may change)
4. zoom out and walaaaaa.

Re: everything washed out but the eyes

given that the eye color does not share the same hue as anything else in the frame, just use the limit effect in FCP (or i think it's called change color or something in premiere).
you may need to use a garbage mask and another layer underneath i there are other things in the frame the same color
