Everything that is wrong with this world

I'm just talking about musical movements in pop culture, the soundtrack of our lives.

The music of 1955 did not sound like the music of 1966, which didn't sound like the 1973, which didn't sound like the music of 1978, which sounded quite different from 1984, which didn't sound like the music of 1992 . . .

And then it stopped. Everything since then has pretty much been a rehash of something else.

i'm getting pretty sick of all the old bastards on this forum trashing hiphop when their knowledge of it extends to what they have seen on MTV and the Oscars...to quote a favorite movie:"You're like a little child who wanders into a room.....DONNIE YOU"RE OUTTA YOUR ELEMENT!!!!

you can go ahead and not like the RAP on MTV, but don't start talking about it like you know what you're talking about....mainstream rap is a small piece of a much larger puzzle....if you took the time to educate yourself you'd learn that there is plenty of positive hiphop out there IF YOU WANT TO HEAR IT...

i don't LIKE most country music, but you wont catch me saying that its NOT music, or its misrepresenting rednecks....its music, you don't like it, don't buy/download/listen to it...

as for criticizing Gansta Rap for being so negative, there ARE actually people in America that still live this way, and for them this music is a reflection of their lives...sure alot of the commercial rappers are fake, but this is a REAL culture that still lives on today...just maybe not in your neighborhood...i know that i personally wouldn't have been able to afford some of the things in life that i wanted (car, college, DVX!!!) by working a minimum wage job....

as for the music, you don't like it - don't listen....just don't talk about things you don't know like your OPINION is an authority...

just MY opinion

That's the best explanation I have seen for what you are saying. And, of course, music has been fairly stagnant for some time now. You've got to wonder VH1 will do when they need to do "I Love the 00s". Nondescript. I'm fairly eclectic in my musical taste which includes Classic Rock (high school in the late 60s-early 70s), Jazz, Blues, older R & B, Country, Reggae, Irish, some African, Country Rock, some Classical, "Hard" Rock... About the only thing I don't like is Rap and Metal. Metal tends toward discordance for me while Rap just doesn't speak to me.

Um... yeah... chill out, "G".

Why are you patronizing him? He's making a valid statement. Tact is a man's best friend.

THough he did call old people bastards.. LOL.

Anyway-- Mainstream rap is completely different, he's absolutely right.

Doesn't matter, because it's not going anywhere and neither is any other genre of music. Everyone's just wasting time bitching about it.

Granted, the only song I found to listen to is what's playing on their home page . . .

But what's so different about that?

Listen to the music... it's not something you'll hear every day... the new music scene is the hardcore screemo stuff... grant it the link I posted is mild stuff... there is even more hard stuff... the guitar licks are insane too... I respect their talent... compare their musicianship with that of bands from back in the day... and these guys really show them up...

Music has gone nowhere new in about 15 years.

That is ABSOLUTELY true. I exited the main stream music listening scene about ten years ago, and when I turn it on today, it sounds to me to be the same old stuff repackaged.

That's the beauty of mp3, though. (Although, full disclosure, I do not listen to mp3's much either.)

I think we have this same argument about every three months. The same points are brought up, the same grumblings. Nothing new comes from it. Silly argument. Silly and pointless.

-an old bastard.

What are you saying? You bought your DVX with drug money? Nice one. Hey I could sure use a new tripod. Anybody want to buy some crack off me? No wait. I'll just keep putting money aside with the legit job I have now. Just like when I was younger and had to do the same thing when I had a minimum wage job.
It may be real culture but negative energy is negative energy. Everything else is bullshit and an excuse. EVERYBODY has shlt in their lives. You want to talk about rough..go talk to some indians living on a reserve.

nope...think poker buddy...but gambling's not always legal....

but seriously - i love you old bastards...i'll bump some Johnny Cash with you guys any time....

Here is a suggestion.

What if we had a seperate section for music that inspires us. We could have it broken down into genres...hiphop, cinematic, classical, rock, indie..whatever. I think it would be easier for people to find a direction in what they like.

Don't run up - 'cause I kick like Bruce
I wanna and I'm gonna trade heads with a moose.
That's funny.

Oregon i'm glad you got your equipment through gambling. Did you get the gambling money from selling drugs? Just kidding. By the way, I'm not an old bastard, johnny cash is alright and I could go head to head with you any day when it came to hiphop or rap. Son I was slappin hoes and ridin on 24s while you were still shittin your diapers. Just f*ckin with ya dawg. I'm not old. I feel like it though lately. And I 100 percent backup gambling as a way to get equipment. I would also add that it's much better to wait until your opponents are waster.

Okay back to work.

on the serious tip ... just to play devil's advocate ... I think there's merit in both opinions ... think its an oversimplification to lump all rap music into one mysogynist violent category, but as much as I love Gangsta N-I-P (because he makes me laugh at his dumbass), clearly some RAP acts go to far.

And so do lots of metal acts.

And ... Hudson ... don't you think Tipper Gore would lump Devil's Rejects and Gangster Rap into the same "evils of society bin?"

I mean its a movie about a bunch of people who goa on a killing spree and rape women and we sympathize with them.

What's worse, they are not killing people to to pay rent or buy drugs, it's just for fun?????

Now the big difference is that there are tons of Movies like Ses Biscuit from the "white established patriacrhy" and even horror movies in general have become somewhat more safe for consumption, but the PREDOMINANT face of RAP music is mysoginist and violent.

I also think My Hump is a great song.

It's stupid and has a great beat
and is no dumber than
"My Dingaling"
"Tuttu Fruti"
"Bird is the Word (wipe out)"
"Get a Job" (shana nana shana na nana dip dip)

And I actually think that song is about a woman
using her feminne wiles to victimize a bunch of men

Its content and message are no different than Madonna's
"Material Girl"
only its a little more honest about what's going on.

its not only old people that don't like the music. I'm 19 and don't like it. Hip hop and rap are different in my book. Like i said in the oscars thread I listen to Will Smith ( i'm not afraid to admit it. but to me Will Smith is more hip hop, even close to pop if you want to think that way).

Anyway my point is that its not just old people that dislike rap. you like it, thats fine i'm not jumping on you about what you like to listen to.

I like Johnny Cash. His music is great. I'm going to go listen to his music right now... don't disrespect The Man In Black...
