Just saw this film and it SUCKED. I'm a big fan of coming-of-age films (working on one myself) and I absolutely loved the title to this film/book. "Everything is Illuminated". It's the way I want to look at the world. And I thought the trailer was great. Okay, I'm ready. Let's go see this thing...
...
What the HELL was that??? Apparently Elijah is looking for his grandfather's lover who saved him from the Germans in WWII. Okay, still interested. Sort of. His "guide" is another grandfather (that's his name: Grandfather) who says he's blind but in reality he can see fine. This sounds like it should be funny. It isn't. The grandfather's grandson is a Ukranian who speaks bad English. Sounds like it should be funny. It isn't. The grandfather has a seeing-eye-dog named Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. Sounds like it should be funny. It isn't. And then the whole thing culminates (spoilers - sort of, since i don't really know what happened) in the grandfather killing himself because, I think, he was Jewish, and he doesn't like Jews. But he didn't realize this until the end of the movie. Why didn't he know he was Jewish when he was growing up? I'm being only mildly sarcastic here. And when Elijah gets home, he ends up seeing all the people he met on his journey right there at the airport, except they're dressed differently and are now Americans, which I think means he was writing this story all along, and none of this journey really happened. But he said earlier that he wasn't a writer. So I don't get it. The only redeeming feature of the movie is when Elijah is going home and kisses the dog goodbye. He says 'bye Sammy'. I couldn't help but think he was still Frodo, still saying bye to Sam, and still wanting to engage in all that gay hobbit sex.
If there's someone who saw this movie, can they explain it to me?
