Every Poly Counts

Hey guys, I was fooling around today with low poly cars, free from Turbosquid, and I just realised that with some tweaking and faking around you can get some ok results.

Of course the application for video would work even better (if I get more time I'll do a video)

This model is super low poly under 500 polys!

NO advanced material just, some photo textures that came with the model

NO advanced lighting, I simply eyeballed three lights to match the real world shadow,

NO GI

NO HDRI

practically nothing!

Just a simple plane to eyeball world orientation and catch the shadows

Note:

Its no way near perfect, but the simple fact these results can be had from such low tech methods is pretty good I think!

Thanks Tom ! :)

yes, I just made a plane under the car as the "ground" and lined it up with edge of the pavement.

I'm waiting for day light so I can go shoot some video handheld, and I then do a 3d track and place that car into it, it should look pretty realistic.

I'll upload the result once its done, I think these low poly cars are great for long shots, where the car is a distance away. In that above example thats as close as you could take it to the camera, before it starts looking too fake.

Oh yea I forgot with video I can add motion blur (it always hides tons of flaws!)

Would be interesting to see how this works out, might work out great for some background cars that are difficult to get like police cars.

Mixing it with video would be cool. I'd love to see how it turns out. I would definitely use that as a pre-vis tool. :)

geeze with motion blur on moving footage you could easily create Visual FX shots that will look realistic with ONLY 500 POLYS !!! that's nuts!

The render time saved is probably massive ?

some transparency on the windows would help too ?

what 3D APP are you using?

I'm using max, and just the standard scanline (so not even any fancy render engine)

The render time is near realtime, of course adding motion blur would slow it down a little maybe add a 1/2 second.

The possibilities are endless for example you could throw in physics & CG fire/explosion simulation, with a bit more Roto "elbow grease" lots of crazy shots should be possible.

Its day time now, so I'm going to shoot some video for 3d tracking :)

I usually use PFtrack, its always given me solid tracks in the past, but I guess any tracker is just a valid, just a matter of choice of tools.

I did plan on shooting some video today, but between lectures and research and doing experiments I lost my day light hours (here in the UK it still gets dark around 4:00PM ) :( I'll shoot tommorow.
