Etymotic in ear phones: Which model?

Hello. I'm looking at the Etymotic page, trying to determine which model of in-ear phones are best for monitoring audio-for-video. It looks like the "S" variant is marketed as "monitor quality" while the "P" model has increased bass response for portable music players. As such, I presume it's the "S" model I want to try/buy.

Can someone who has these confirm this?

Also the only complaint on these seems to be discomfort with prolonged use. How uncomfortable?? I'm accustomed to having a stethoscope in my ear for most of the day. Should I expect this to be similar?

Thanks

what are you reasons for wanting to go with in ear rather than over the ear headphones?

There's a reason why you'll rarely see sound mixer's using in-ears.
Not the best at replicating whats actually going to tape. At least not a semi-inexpensive set, which of course
you could still by multiple regular high end over the ear sets for the same cost.

That being said, I personally have been meaning to get a pair of in-ear's just
for those super hot summer days when you're on an eng job outside, where the audio "quality" isn't quite as critical as getting it to tape clean and FAST.

I want something that I can have in my pocket and plug into my camera when I want to monitor inconspicuously. I find that people aren't too concerned/distracted by someone with a video camera but the moment I put on my Sony MDR cans, I'm suddenly the focus. I'm hoping that in-ears are a bit more discrete.

I think, at least in NY, people are used to seeing cameras everywhere. Headphones, on the other hand, make you look like you're trying to listen in on them! Same result when you pull out a tripod; all of a sudden, you're a "pro" and people start asking questions.

For critical sound, I have traditional 'phones.

I've got some ER6i's that I used one time on a flight... they sound pretty decent and neutral, but they don't fit my ears that well... if anybody wants them... $50... complete in the box with all accessories and will look brand new.

I've used IEMs for some location work before... it just depends on the situation. Most of the time I would use 7506 or 280 pro... but if the "talent" is already scared of all the production gear IEMs make them less self conscious of their speech.

I own a set of ER6i's as well and like them, but I wouldn't recommend them for on-set mainly because they can be a bit of a pain if you have to take them out and put them back in constantly (as it's hard to actually have conversations or hear anything when you've got them in). But to your original question I've never had a problem with having them in all day.

Over the ear would be much better.

Thanks everyone. After looking at them in the store today and considering my own ear issues, I decided it wasn't worth the potential harm that comes from having something that much closer to the ear drum. I'll learn to be conspicuous!
