Ethernet connection on a monitor?

My wife brought me home a 9" security monitor from work that they were getting rid of.  It serves my purposes as well as a TV would, and it's nice and compact.  Plus, it was free, and a pro monitor is lower on my list than a tripod and a new PC.  Anyway, there is an ethernet cable that is connected to the back.  I hooked it up to my PC, but I couldn't get it to do anything.  What would be the purpose of this?

Also, there is a very slight image burn on the monitor (almost imperceptible, but you can see it against a solid background.)  Is there any way to get rid of that?  It's mostly an annoyance, but if I can reduce it, or get rid of it somehow, it would be nice.

Re: Ethernet connection on a monitor?

You can try the old wives tale, or urban legend, about sending a bright white signal to the TV to get rid of burns. But don't get your hopes up. You get what you pay for ;D

Something tells me the ethernet cable was a connection to the advanced monitoring system they had installed at the office. They use the same cable but the signal is much different.

But a free monitor is a free monitor. Score!!

Re: Ethernet connection on a monitor?

That's about what I thought. Thanks.

How does one use an external monitor when editing with a PC? Do you need some sort of special interface?

Re: Ethernet connection on a monitor?

Technically, you have a female RJ45 jack...it's not ethernet unless it's wired on pins 1, 2, 3 and 6 to receive ethernet traffic.

RJ45 jacks can be used for almost anything (they're used regularly for PRI, BRI, Ethernet, etc).

Re: Ethernet connection on a monitor?

I connect to my external TV/monitor via my videocard. It has an s-video/RCA jack, along with the RGB connection for my computer monitor. You can find really good videocards for pretty cheap. They'll have RGB, DVI, and video out.

Re: Ethernet connection on a monitor?

Unless I misunderstand the question (sadly, happens often)

You should have your external monitor connected through the camera.

PC > Firewire to camera > Camera video to monitor

Really? And that will show you the stuff that you what your NLE is doing?

Whoa! Be very careful plugging in cables without knowing what they are for. You could easily fry your computer/card/etc..

Yes - In Premiere anyways. Not sure on Vegas - Should be same.

there is a standard for delivering power over ethernet...IEEE 802.3af, but it would be very unlikely that a security monitor would have a function to deliver power over ethernet. (not to mention that it was only ratified about a year ago)

Possible, but I would think unlikely.

Re: Ethernet connection on a monitor?

My buddy has alway's used the computer to firewire cable to video camera to tv, method for sending out his image, what a mess plus you have your camera running all the time, like P.K. Gillock said, I run a 32mb radeon pci video card for my secondary 15" monitor, a 64mb geforce agp for my primary 17" monitor, and use the s-video out from the geforce to a 30" tv. this gives you less connections, plus you can display other crap on the tv monitor other than just the output for the editing. I.E, my office is configured with a sofa/couch across from the 30" so I can toss a dvd in and move it over on to it, I use my computer as a PVR from the satilite and can then play back onto that tv? a few more applications than just having the firewire connect to the camera.
