What do you guys suppose is the major difference between Asian cinema and ours ?

Say 20 years ago ? Today ? The future ?

uh the talent has risen in the last 20 years

they started out with alot of asian marital art type films through through the 70's which came over here in madness. But now Asian Cinema has evovled using realism and culutre more than they used to. I mean when you think Asian cinema the biggest name is Kurosawa becuase he touched realism with action. Now it seems more people are going that route than just being action orentied. We make mindless action films they seem to make more thought provoking action films. story with action (you can get both?)

Uh J-Horror seemed to influence alot in the early 2000's but it seems now the Korean wave is dominate with depressing great films. Hong Kong seems to have the Martial Art Dramas down.

Japanese Films are taking more Bizarre Routes with thought provoking but newly concepted ideas. like Takashi Beat Kitano Films hes evolving when you thing he would be ready to retire since hes in his 60s or 70's.

I dunno about the future I know they are being very drama driven and make you care about peoples ordeals and situations. Or they are just fun to watch. I know most of the movies i know are being remade in the next few years over here so I'm not sure as long as the talent is there I think we can see alot of great films.

See anything from Wong Kar Wai, from HK- specially Chungking Express, In the Mood For Love and Fallen Angels.

Bruce Lee films- Essential.

Shaolin Soccer- As good as Kung-Fu Hustle (but less Philosophical).

Also If you like your thrillers, see " The Eye". Interesting supernatural thriller.

Also See Films from director Fruit Chan. Innovative HK independent director that does things in an interesting and entertaining way. Has a very interesting short film called " Dumplings"- really worth a look.

Isabella ( A movie shot in my hometown, Macau, that's receiving rave reviews)

Infernal Affairs I and II- Great " Godfatheresque" movies with HK's best actors in it. II as a better script and cinematography, but I, with Andy Lau and Steve Leung, stealls the show.

Japanese movies, see Kitano's work, Kurosawa (duh), and actually ANIME from Gainax. Very interesting narrative work from them.
