Any compositing app can do roto. AE, Shake, Combustion, Fusion, etc. Some apps handle it better than others. Some are specifically designed for the task, for example Imagineer Systems Motor.
Shake is better for tracking and compositing.
AE is better for creating motion graphics.
Shake's learning curve is steep compared to AE. Node based workflows are powerful but they take some time to get your head around. You can dowload a trial of AE from Adobe's site. I don't know if Apple has a demo version of Shake. FWIW, Shake has been discontinued so Apple is selling it for $500, the original price was $3500. No one knows for sure what will happen to the app., there's speculation that it will become part of Final Cut Studio in a future release.
Note - Roto work is painful. It's time consuming tedious work - no software will change those facts. I generally steer away from roto work unless the project demands it.
