eSATA vs USB 3.0

We're trying to set up a system where we archive/edit footage on internal hard drives that will be docked externally. The idea is that for every video project we factor in the cost on an internal 3.5" SATA 7200RPM drive. We use USB3/eSATA drive docks to edit directly off those drives.

So the workflow is something like this:

0. Charge client for cost of drive. Factored into total cost of video project.
1. Dock the new drive
2. Capture/edit straight to the drive (including all raw footage, assets, audio, fonts, stills, documents, intermediate files and finished videos)
3. Pull the drive out of the dock, label it and put it on a shelf in a cabinet.
4. Pull out drive one or two years later if client requests edits and repeat steps 1-3.

So my question is, what's the better interface for us, eSATA or USB3? We'll be working with mostly HDV footage and DNxHD intermediates. Some of which have been as high as 32+GB's per clip. Most of our projects do not exceed 500GB's total. But eventually we'll be moving into DSLR footage without tape backups, so HDD archival will become more important.

My IT guy is trying to push me toward USB3, but I'm leaning toward eSATA. So I'm looking for outside perspective.

For some reason I got more speed out of USB3 220ish MB/sec than from E-Sata 160ish MB/sec.
I don´t know why, since it should be the opposite looking at the tech specs.

eSATA connectors are also a pain to deal with. They come loose very easily, and I've had a high failure rate with cables. USB 3.0 is also faster than eSATA.

Thank you for your input everyone. Looks like we'll go the USB3 route than. The drive docks have both connections but we need to buy the internal cards for our machines, which is one or the other.

Just some aditional tips for USB3:

- Device Policy - make sure you set it to "Performance"
- Don´t have any USB2 devices on the same hub
- Write cache on
- Use the vendors driver
