I'm using fcp 5.1 with leopard and when i try to import my p2 footage (1080/24p) an error sign comes up "one or more p2 clips failed to import.." the check box for "remove duplicate/pulldown.." is unchecked

I've been researching but haven't found an answer
do i need a newer version of fcp?

FCP's Log & Transfer function is buggy, sometimes it just fails to import a perfectly good clip. You can try updating to a later version (5.1.4 was the latest before you have to pay for the upgrade) so make sure you're up to date. But it might still refuse to work, which is why I refuse to use it; you can use P2CMS or Raylight or MXF4QT or Calibrated's MXF importer and forever avoid "Log & Transfer" and avoid this bug.

If you want a free solution, for that one clip, download panasonic's P2CMS program and install it. That will let you drag the MXF clips onto the timeline. You'll have to match the audio up separately, but at least it gets past the buggy "log & transfer" function.

Are they spanned clips? I get this same problem sometimes and what has worked for me is just moving the in and out points a frame or two in or out.

@ brinks your right on with the moving the IN and OUT points just a bit. I did this same thing on a SPANNED clip (45 minute clip) and it worked ok. My steps were to use P2CMS to import my P2 footage from hvx200 and then use log and transfer which gave me an error about 1/4 of the way. this same clip was the SPANNED clip.
