Equipment Rental Contracts

Hey guys,

just a quicky here. I have rented out my stuff to friends and so on, but now a friend of a friend is looking at doing a 3 day shoot and wants to rent some of my gear. What is the simplest type of way to ensure that if anything is damaged, he must cover the costs of the replacement/repair.

Are there standard contracts for this kind of thing? If so can you please point me in the right direction?

Should i take a deposit? I just need some sort of document that protects me, which he will sign, should anything fall south.

Thanks!

fantastic, thanks Zaza. Last question, how does one determine the amount one should put down for a security deposit?

alright, one more thing:

I'm renting a friend of a friend:

1) Letus Elite with rails
2) 2 x arri 650 fresnel
3) nikon 24mm lens F2
4) SD 302 mixer

a weekend and a monday for $250

I asked for a deposit of $100 in case any item might come back slightly damaged from a cosmetic sense that may depreciate the value of its resale.

Now, the big question, i have a contract ready, but does a well writen contract protect me legally? Is it really necessary for me to ask for a money order/bank draft in the full amount of the equipment incase they run away with it or break it completely? Or should the contract cover me enough?

Thanks.

A well written contract is worth exactly what the honor of the two people signing it is worth. So it doesn't matter how great your contract is, if the person signing it is a weasel.

If you're not in the rental business, renting is tough -- do you have insurance to replace your equipment if it's lost or stolen? Etc...

There should be nothing wrong with asking for full payment up front, I mean, it's one weekend, surely the renter has that dough available -- and if they don't, then you don't really want to be renting to them anyway, right?
