Could anyone offer an opinion on inexpensive softboxes such as the westcott, lowells or others. Also, does anyone have a recommendation on a color (k) temp meter.

Thanks in advance

color temp. meters are expensive. Dont get cheap with a softbox unless its a great tool to have. Unless your going to be using it on a junky light thats not worth putting the money into, get a quality product. I recently bought a Chimera Video Pro softbank... it was like $270, but its worth it. So, chimera, or photoflex are my recomendations

Westcott and Lowell are not "cheap" softboxes. in fact I prefer them over photoflex and I own all three brands. I love the Lowell Rifa softboxes but they are very pricey.

I will often just use a tough spun gel in a frame in front of the light. To reflect all the lost light from the sides, I wrap them with some special foil I made. One side is aluminum foil and the other is regular black wrap. This is a cheap solution to the softbox, but be sure to save the foil for next time.
