Equipment on plane!?

I'm contemplating whether or not to take up a project in NYC(I'm in Chicago). I can see myself taking the DVX onboard with me, but what in the world do I do with my tripod? It's a Bogen 3021.. about 7lbs.. I only have a normal soft Bogen carrying case for it. I don't suppose that's adequate protection if I check-in my tripod?

On a related note.. what is the smallest/lightest tripod you guys found to be heavy and smooth enough for the DVX?

i've checked my pod before... but it was in a portabrace mummycase... still a softcase, but reinforced.

Go to your local packing place, kinkos, ups store,... and buy a cardboard box or tube that the softbag/tripod will fit in. It will at least survive the round trip.....

I refuse to go light... I use a Miller DS5 tripod/head for silky smooth moves.. A bit overkill but worth every penny when combined with the StealthZoom.
