wow, quite the collection! I am still learning my way around alot of the grip terminology. What's a Floppy?

A floppy is a 4'x4' solid flag, that has an additional 4'x4' ft , black cover material velcro'ed to it. Once it is one a stand, it can be detached, and made into a 4'x8' ft
flag. Some are velcro'ed to the top of the 4x4, and some are attached to the bottom. You can create an inverted L-shape, so you can have black fabric above you and to the side. These are quite often used outdoors to cover your "video village" and your producers. Two floppys, make a nice video "tent". They are also great for hiding light stands, and crew members, and creating negative fill.

Awsome, thanks for the good definition! I was helping out on a film this weekend as a PA/grip and saw a few of those around, just didn't know what they were called. I am trying to build my vocabulary for this stuff so that when the gaffer's like "Hey, get me a floppy" I don't look like a total dumbass. Thanks! I should do a google search for a griptionary. Also still working on getting a handle on the whole set ettiquette thing. Coming from my own non budget productions with friends straight onto a professional well put together production is hard, because I wanted to ask so many questions but didn't want to piss anyone off (which I did at one point, so I had to bite my tongue alot after that). Getting used to this crazy chain of command is hard....

Go to the Matthews website. I can't remember it exactely..perhaps www.mse.com
but I could be wrong. They have a "Griptionary" of common terms of frequenty used tools and grip gear...Also you should get Uva's Basic grip book..By Michael UVA. from Focal Press- Go to Amazon, or order it from a local bookstore. I believe he may also have a more advanced book, and I have another one of his books called Uva's Guide to Cranes,Dollies and remote heads. I use many different types of remote heads when I work on gigs, and this book came in handy when we needed to know exact specs on a certain crane for shipping and setup.
Here's a grip word for ya..."Brancholoris" and a baby pin or baby nail on , is also called a "Directors Chair"...lol

Hey Mister Bcheong....aka Mister grip Truck...How many C-47's ya got ?
LOL That's the true measure of a gaffer !

I think it would be nice to state what you do as well, just to get a better idea of what equipment is best for certain disciplines.

DVX100a

3 homedepot lights.

lots of Gaffers tape..... i mean Lots of gaffers tape.....

I think a few of you are confusing grip gear with electrics gear. A gaffer doesnt generally ask for a "flop", that would be your key grip. Gaffer=Electricity, lights, etc. Grips=Hardware, rigging, diffusing and cutting light.

Some of us wear many hats. As a gaffer, I'm in control of lights, and what they do, and why they are there. I may and usually do, ask my grips to set this up for me. But I make the call...Sometimes I do it myself...
