Epic Underwater Housings

Anyone used this particular housing before? Im doing a surf vid in a few months and this is the best buy i could find.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

I Dunno, but it seems to me like an underwater housing is NOT something to skimp on. I love my DVX to the point that I'd want the very best around it before submerging it in anything.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

I can't find any sites for the equinox for the dvx 100, anybody know where I might find these guys at?

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

never mind, i found it.

Thanks for the info guys, and Jarred Im gonna probably grab 3 of those 5000mah batteries. Is there anyway to send it by greyhound as I am on Vancouver Island and it would be mucho cheaper.

cheers, Tyler Bliss

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

Hate to break it to ya.. but to get a housing with function/stability.. you're gonna spend over a grand on it.

Ewa marine bags are not safe for surf. I may be going to Indo in July or August and I am skeptical of using an EpicCam. Sure as hell am not going to use a bag on 3 feet of reef in 12-16 foot surf.

And from what some people told me of Epiccam, they are too floaty. One guy told me the straps disconnected from the tube and he had to swim over a 1/2 mile to get it. Even then, you can't control focus or zoom. Just press record on or off functionality. They said if you're going into a pool or something with calmer conditions, then it would be alright.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

Hey thanks for the input, after doing some number crunching i have decided against this epic one, because where im going, the money shots are impossible to get from land, and too expensive from a boat.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

i would look into renting.

i am generally not a fan of renting but good waterproof housings are super expensive and unless you are a dive shop who does videos daily its just not worth it.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

That would be an option mate, however i will be going to central america for 3 months and rental costs for that amount of time would be rather expensive.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

yes. i guess that means your going to have to buy a higher quality one.

one option, what % of your shooting will be in the water?

i did a shark dive in nassau bahamas and they shot the dives and sold tapes and they used a small sony 1 chip in a simple housing, and i am pretty sure the small sony housings are a LOT cheaper because there is a much bigger demand and it is such a small camera.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

If i can afford the housing by the time i leave, then i'd like to shoot at least 30% or more of it from the water, however if I can't, then it'll all be done in an old school fashion from land with the telephoto lens. It's not the way i'd like to do it, but at the end of the day the story/content will outweigh the technology, as in any good film.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

about shooting with a 1 chipper.. I shot a movie last year that had some under water stuff.. spent a day and about 15k to do it, and had to throw all of it out because it just looked like video way to much.. now that was dramatic, so if your doing something for TV you might get away with it.

Re: Epic Underwater Housings

If you want a very light and durable housing check out http://www.delmarcamerahousings.com/dirty.html  (scroll down the page to see all the pics) This model is shown with the pole handle, but you can get it with U-wings handles instead.

The shell/housing is "double walled" carbon fiber so it only weighs 2.5-3 pounds and you can order it with custom controls to meet your requirements. You can also get additional ports for lenses like the Century Optics Fisheye.

They're in the process of putting up their new site, but in the meantime you can contact Erik at 858-259-5830  (let him know that DPCFilms sent ya!)

On the subject - Does anyone know if you can buy a waterproof LANC control?

I bought an Epic Cam housing for my DVX and for the $ it's great ! I took it to Fiji and have used it a lot in the Florida keys. You must add weight to it. I added 30-50 lbs [I use the 5lb lead bead bags and am still experimenting with weight dist. depending on the shoot. So for shallow depths and shooting in spray , surf etc. it's fine but you really need to spend a lot of $ to get a good dome port lens on the better housings to do serious underwater shooting !

im the guy that had the epic housing straps break on me and had to swim after it. i now use that housing as my bathroom trash can. for what im using it for now i could not be more happy. these things are great if you keep them away from water.
