ePhoto Bi-Color 1000 LED?

Amazing, that unit sells for 599 clams and nowhere is it mentioned of how bright that thing is. I mean, would anyone shell out 599 of their hard earned dollars for some panel light that is good from 1 to 15 ft.? They could have just as well said it is good up to 30 ft. or 60 ft. for that matter as there was no indication of at what reference/gain/iso/asa/ setting at all. I'm not saying that a lux reading at 3 ft. is the definitive yardstick of comparison. But a rough start. In most (if not, in all) cases the spec. would be overly exaggerated anyway. I hear it over and over again like WoW !! that has a 1000 leds in it (count em') it's gotta be super powerful !, Next thing would be " I just got mine in today and it's got 2000 leds in it" and so on. If that unit is as good as they say it is, then they should be proud to display the lux AND the CRI index at various temperatures. If that unit was selling for $99, well then I would not expect a rib eye for the price of a weiner.

You know what, I hate to be harsh but sorry guys and gals, I have a business to run and do not have time to appease every request like this. And quite frankly this stuff gets a little ridiculous don't you think?

Oh, appease? Interesting choice of terms. I've been a gaffer a long time, David, and was a published scientist for a longer time before that. I have over 20 gaffer and cinematographer credits on IMDB. I don't appreciate being called ridiculous.

Hey guys,

Some individuals test gear in different ways or to more demanding lengths. David has been nice enough to lend us his opinion on the product as he went about testing it. Since David is not the manufacturer of the product, but simply a customer providing other interested parties with some insight, I think we ought to respect his right to decline requests for further in-depth testing.

If there isn't anyone here on DVXuser who has the time or ability to full-fill these desired tests, I recommend the interested parties contact the product's manufacturer and ask them the hard questions. If the manufacturer won't/can't answer, I'd say you might find a good answer to the question to "should I buy...?" right there.

Ryan, I don't have the slightest problem with David not wanting to do anything for any reason whatever, that's up to him. I asked him politely what he could tell or show about real world performance not for a bunch of tests. I don't like the unnecessary rude response, it's insulting and uncalled for. That sort of thing has no place here. I'm sure you understand. I'll leave this thread and steer clear of Jones.

Sorry I barked, but this happens all too often on this board. Someone tries to be helpful in their spare time and it's never good enough, or the answers don't come quick enough for you. Someone posts a still and you cry for motion, they post motion and then you want raw, now post a faster pan, can you do a rack focus with every lens made. It was this type behavior that I was referring to as ridiculous.

I offered to give the original poster a little review to help with his purchasing decision, and then someone decides I need a school lesson, and my initial color temp post was of no value. I fully intended to continue posting light output, spread, falloff, color compensation, bla bla, but my CL-200A, Color Meter III, Color Meter II, and various light meters are not affixed to my hip 24/7 and I do have a life.

So maybe stills with charts and such would be best posted by someone with more free time than I have, and by someone much more qualified than myself, like a scientist with gaffer credit on an Internet site.

Good Luck!

Dave

David- your efforts are much appreciated here. Hope I didn't set you up to dodge hi power DVXuser pellets!!!

Any info you learn, when time allows, is most appreciated when you post it.

thanks

In post #9 and in post #11 as well as in post #19 of this thread i asked at total of 3 times for a simple luminosity output test. Especially in post #19 where i asked politely "when you have the time". That in no way implied a rush answer, as i well know Mr. Jones has a life and business to attend to. I fully understand . Nevertheless, we still do not have an answer to the lux output of that light. Although the original thread starter wanted an answer related to color temperature and not lux output, I took the opportunity here to ask about the lux output as Mr. Jones has one live in the flesh and not a product spec sheet, and I thought it would have been a perfect opportunity to obtain an output reading since he had the meter(s) at hand as well as the light, instead of starting a new thread concerning the light output ( a figure that should have been always included with any led light's spec.). It's like the perfect opportunity of a UFO that lands on your back yard, aliens have tea and biscuits, chat with them for an hour or so and then leave, only realizing you forgot to take a group family picture with them.

Alrighty, so now that everyone has had a say, I'll again stress the following:

I recommend interested parties contact the product's manufacturer and ask them the hard questions. If the manufacturer won't/can't answer, I'd say you might find a good answer to the question to "should I buy...?" right there.
If another individual (who has the product and the equipment/time to test) surfaces, by all means request results from them. Until that happens, for this thread to continue, I'd recommend finding another way to attain stats about this product, notably asking the manufacturer. Personally, I'd be very concerned as a consumer to purchase a light from a video-lighting company and there isn't comprehensive photometric charts published.

So if anyone reading this has some new data to share, please do... otherwise let's please move on. We've exhausted this information well.

I will have a review of this unit based on its its actual manufacturer from my exploits at NAB 2011. But I'll make it clear it will be posted when I get to it, I have reviewed EVERY LED at NAB and will post my findings and opinions as soon as I overcome some scheduling hurdles.

To note you probably will find my comments somewhat negative about this fixture but compared to other 1000 LED units it isn't the worst but clearly not a winner either.

Fantastic! :) Thanks for the review, and it sure means more when in comparison to other LED units.

Best,

Chris- I'd previously read (and enjoyed) your review, and look forward to your findings on the ePhoto when you get the time, and whether it's, as you put it, just another " “China Crap Panel “.
thanks

Excellent! I've been wanting to pick up an LED panel and wanted to see someone go through a bunch of the offered models. Thanks in advance!!
