Entry level shotgun mic

Rtfm can be found on the internet. http://tascam.com/product/dr-40/

It's important to learn finding things yourself...

I know that but I read some mic have problems with some recorders (don't know why)...
I'm still kinda undecided between the ntg-2 and at875r. Gary says the ntg-2 is worse but from the samples I don't hear the difference (but then again it's not a direct comparison). What bothers me is that the at875r doesn't support battery power so with phantom power from the dr40 what can I get, 3h at max? The ntg-2 can last up to 400h with battery power but it also costs more. I'm so confused:)

You will not be disappointed with the 875r the difference is cost of AA batteries.. big deal...
I have an 875r and it sounds great to me.

buy it go make movies and have fun. stop over analyzing it.

You're right but allow me to get the best out of of money since it's the first time I deal with audio. The problem is that Gary says the ntg1/2 are worse, if correct for everyone I would not hesitate to get the at875r even for less! But if ntg series is equal or better I would spend more, it's not the cost of aa batteries but the "pain" of having to change batteries on the recorder every 2 hours when on battery the mics would last hundreds of hours.

(Gary don't hate me, I'm not offending you in anwyay it's just that I made an extensive search, I have read only good things about the at875r, that's true, but no one mentioning either one of them is better/worse than the other. I don't understand why this guy didn't test the rode ntg-2! Wasn't it out in 2008? It would have made me decide very fast since I would have real side to side comparisons)

youre asking a honda civic vs toyota corolla question.. they are both good and are both better than your experiance.
buy one and get busy learning your craft, which will make more difference than the meager differences between the mics.
youre going to have to chasnge battery in camera more often than the audio recorder anyways (so what)
thats like making decision on the two cars I mentioned earlier based on how many cup holders they have...

I hope I dom't offend you either. just trying to help.

I've recently upgraded my audio department by selling my Azden SGM-1x to get a Rode NTG-2. The difference is quite noticeable for 100$ price difference.
I've done a quick test recently, comparing various mic with a cheap Azden Lav, so you could get a good idea how it sounds to you.
If it can help you.

Legitimate question: how much do you think a portable recorder like the tascam dr40 can last giving phantom power at 24v?

You should run phantom at 48v mics like that way better and are quieter and usually have better dynamic headroom like that.

and it should run longer than the camera will on its battery.

with my h4n 24v phantom power turned on..at875r can last about 1hour I think...with fully charged 2 battery.
yeah..it is short..but 2 battery cost only 10 bucks..just buy some more loh..

It actually depends on the mic. Some mics for instance really need 48V so...

Mics use different amounts of power. It actually varies a lot.
so you should rephrase your question with the mic you want to use. And with a little luck you will find a user with a dr40 and your mic who can give you an accurate number.

Any numbers from folks with different mics and recorders are very close to meaningless.

YES...it will operate with any of those voltages they mention, however the performance is measured at 48v which gives it the optimal operating voltage.

Just in case someone's handy with DIY projects, this could solve some problems.
