Ensemble films

Couple of threads recently on this. Just thought I would mention that the Sept/Oct issue of Script magazine has a feature article on writing ensemble film screenplays, written by none other than our very own dvxuser member Bill Martell. Kudos to Bill!

Oh really? Wow! I want to read that for sure. I'm very curious, especially now that I've put mine together, it was really an interesting process, notecards very much needed. It's very hard to find good written material on this as well, I've noticed. Almost every book talks about, "Your protagonist must... he must... she must... " blah blah etc. Few have any advice on what to do if you have 4 equal protagonists, for instance, none more important than the other. I found a TINY nugget of wisdom in one book basically just saying that you have one theme and multiple characters, and that's what I was going for, so that's about all I found so far.

I'd really like to read this article.

I know QT does this with most of his films, despite still having a stand out main character (i.e The Bride), but Inglorious Basterds felt like it was more of an ensemble piece than anything. If any character was to be granted a main character it was Hans Landa (Landen?) over Aldo Raine.

I thought you were asking a question about ensemble casts and was going to answer with the good news/bad news that I have an article about that in the new issue of Script Magazine: good news is you can buy the mag and read it, bad news is that I have to wait a year before I can post any part of that article here or on my website... so you can't read it for free.

You can read whatever my script tip is for today for free, though...

- Bill
