Not particularly well informed but from afar I always admired the English systems for creatives being able to work without being locked Into one area. I’m guessing part had to do with subsidies, size and maybe a healthy work is work attitude. Pinter comes to mind. Not sure if that exists today.

I don't think it has/had to do with subsidies, but simply that because of the size off the industry here, locked into geographical areas, the same people pop up. We are also still London centric. We pretend we have moved centres of production all over the country, but we haven't. The BBC base is in Salford, but the reality is it's still in London. The film studios are all around London, ITV are now in The BBC old studios, pre their move North. If you wander around the West End you'll bump into famous faces who often don't even get asked for autographs. I did a theatre production where the Director has just come back from a movie in the US - straight into Directing theatre, then back to America. People still do work in their main industry really, but get seconded into others. Some technical people flip-flop between industries, but tend to specialise in just one. Actors don't really care, a job is a job to them. Oddly, the hire industry however are still very much industry specific. If you need movie lights that's one supplier. No point going to them for moving heads for a theatre show, and their TV inventory will be low. Audio is a bit more spread. You can get the mainstay equipment anywhere. If you want a specific movie audio mixer, that won't be stocked by the theatre people. Radio mics are VERY different. The TV and movie people will have their Lectros and possibly Sony and a few other dedicated products, while the theatre folk tend to stick Sennheiser and Shure as the main brands (with of course a few crossovers)
