ENG Breakaway Cable Optimal Length?

Hi all,

Starting to beef up my kit for bag work (the SD 302 is on its way, as is the new Petrol bag and another wireless kit). I'm wondering what the best length of breakaway I sould get (okay, I know, I should get several lengths, but since the cables are pricey, how about one to start with). I'm guessing 20 or 25 feet (a bit long?), but am looking to those with more bag work experience. Matt, how long was your cable on the work you did a few weeks ago?

Thanks!

Phil

Hey Oleg,

I saw in another post you recommend getting the camera side with RCA rather than 3.5 for monitoring. Do you think getting a 3.5 - RCA adapter works as well? That way I can have the best of both worlds (and it works on cameras that don't do RCA out when recording...)

Thanks!

Phil

Yeah, 20 will work for most situations. Make sure you get one that can get an extention though. With HD feature films starting to become more popular, running a cable between video village and the camera will often require way more then 20, or 25, feet.

Of course you could just send the signal on a Zaxcom stereo ENG wireless. Personally, I like the security of a good cable.

Cheers

Hey Phil,
I also run with the SD302 and the petrol bag. With the breakaway cable, 25 ft is nice because it isnt that heavy when you have to lug it around along with everything hanging on you (mixer, boom, etc). With the nurotrik (sp) connector, you can always extend it and you get more breakaway points. You can also get places to make custom length ones.
This is the one I got (from wilcox sound): http://cgi.ebay.com/MIXER-CABLE-FOR...oryZ3278QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I would also get the better shoulder brace system / harness: http://www.trewaudio.com/catalog/items/item781.htm

Just go with the 3.5mm to rca adaptor. Headphone & RCA should be the same output but you can control the level of the headphones.

And, given the difference in price (~200 vs ~4000) I'd go with a good cable too. ;-)

I just did a feature on a Varicam a couple months ago and the director bitched about me not going wireless to camera (the DP didn't care...the 1st AC did not weigh in). Told him we could do that for an extra $50 a day...he wasn't happy and I doubt I will work with him again but he dropped it after that.

You want the cheapest equipment package....you get the cheapest equipment package...nothing comes for free (see sig below).

Cheers

you can make adapters . ;;y its better , so you can put 5 pin , rcas or use pl mini .
about cables , on current one i run about 50-60 meter outside without any problem , make at least 2 extensions , each 75 feet for normal work on features.
