ENG-44 Mixer or refurbished Tascam HD-P2

Hi there. I have a DVX100b and a nice lightwave carbon pole, K-tek mount, MK012, BBG, MKH416, Rycote dougal - all that jazz, but no mixer yet, and I need one. I was considering a new Sign Video ENG-44, as I just can't afford the SD302, but I saw a refurbished, as new Tascam HD-P2 for £350. Is it a good one? My only concern, apart from the post production extra stage, is that the level controls aren't designed for riding. Is that just going to be annoying?

Anybody?

Lucas

P.S. I am building a high spec. steadycam at great cost, and when it's up and running, I have to choose between radio mics and double system anyway, so this may be the better option anyway, as radios are expensive and quality-losing, no?

All advice greatly appreciated...

if you dont want run with cable , recorder is a better option
the 44 is one of the worst eng mixers i ever met
the only problem with tascam you need at least tc out on your amera to lock it to ext tc

Not very good mixer VS a good recorder with pretty decent preamps (probably better than the mixer), hmmm let me think.....

Is the 44 really that bad?

I probably won't bother with tc and the umbilical - an extra day in post to sync sound to the guide track is probably more my style for my short films, however annoying it is.

What about using this recorder as a mixer/recorder? Is there any problem with having no mixer? Are the record levels good enough to control levels as you record?

Thanks
Lucas

worst of its kind :-)
your time and money - its your problem - tc helps make theings faster
tascam cant mix and really you dont need to mix anything as it 2 chanel inputs , using it as preamp device to your camera maybe tricky if you run long cables as the output is ubalance and its out consumer level only
you will may find to much hiss if you will push your camera line inputs to the end ,
working directly - its possible but the dual weel is adrag , almost impossible to work with 2 mics at ones if you need continuasly leveling the audio

cheap solutions make allot of headek :-)

no
you need to run free run
and get tc generator feed the tascam , slate every couple of hours or every battery /casset change
