Ender's Game

I've always been mildly surprised this never got adapted. It struck me as the sort of thing hollywood would be itching for. I suppose as they cast their nets for trending fantasy/scifi adventure stories of the young adult variety they finally stumbled onto it. Limited sets, a couple of fairly simple earth-based setups, some fx for the space battles...add a face or two and grab a bunch of kids and you have a movie.

Can't say I'm thrilled by the trailer but it isn't a write off either, they're not giving much away. Doesn't particularly line up to what I saw in my head reading it many (many) moons ago but that's not necessarily a bad thing. For me it will largely come down to whether they get the zero g combat 'games' right. As a young tyke that was the part that blew my mind....a few years later the socio-political message got through. Haven't read it since I was a teen but it occasionally pops into my mind from time to time.

"This Winter". It IS this winter. I was disappointed that they actually meant next winter. They look to be in post right now, so I'm thinking it could be pretty footage. Probably a lot of effects, grading... left to come. But nothing like getting the old PR engine ramping up early, right?

The whole time I was like ... please, please, please let this be some fan trailer and not a legitimate attempt... please...

please ...

Fortunately, in the Youtube comments, it says "This is a fan made, independent, non-profit video based on the novel "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card and is not associated with or endorsed by Orson Scott Card, 20th Century Fox, Lightstorm, the publisher Doherty, Tom Associates,or LLC.
*School Project*"

Whew.

Oops. Missed that. Bit cheeky using the 20th century logo when there's a real movie coming up. Couldn't find a real trailer on another search, just some production photos with Harrison Ford that weren't worth posting. Still, I have renewed hope for this movie. Stumbled on a couple of other fan films in the search, some of them were actually quite good. Considering.

The Stargate footage didn't give it away?

Listened to the book on tape of this, and at the end there's a special commentary section by Card. He says they HAVE been after to him for adaptation for years but they could never reach an agreement ('til now obviously). If I remember correctly, he was very adamant that the kids were no more than 11 or 12 IN REAL LIFE. . .he didn't want them being 14 or 16 and all that comes with that (teen angst BS), since Ender's literally 6 or so when the series starts. That was a major hangup for him and possibly the reason it took this long.

Battlestar Galatica, Avatar, Stargate: Atlantis, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence

That said, they are in fact making an Enders Game movie. Comes out this year, November 1st. Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley are in it. The kid who played Hugo in... Hugo, is Ender.

That's why I didn't bother linking it but the article was interesting. I kind of guessed that it was picked up to feed the Twilight/Hunger Games market. That's a serious worry. Hopefully Orson Scott Card's reluctance to sell the rights will elicit a higher standard from the makers.

I've felt for a number of years that Pixar should have an "adult" division - R-Pix, perhaps? They could make films like "Enders Game," and the actors could be the ages they are supposed to be, and do a lot of the things that real child actors cannot do.

I'm expecting to be disappointed. I'm also expecting to be disappointed by the untitled "Dragonriders of Pern" film in the works.

Newest trailer. It looks amazing. I'm very excited about this.

Saw an interview with Orson Scott, and seems they've been trying to make a movie of this for a long time. He stated that they tried to adapt the book into a film and it just never worked. So apparently, there are no scenes from the book in the movie. It's a story adaptation, but it's not a scene for scene. This was also confirmed with recent information that the movie spans only 1 year, and that Bean is in Ender's launch group. I'm no book purest. I loved the book, but I'm fine with it being adapted and changed. A movie is a different beast. As long as they don't mess around with the major themes of the book, that is what is important to me.

Saw the movie. It was good. Definitely a watch it in the theaters, two thumbs up. I liked the look. It was realistic futuristic. Some modernization without looking like a crazy imagined future world, just what things might look like 30 years from now. The acting was good. I liked the story. It was very immersive.

My only negative comment was that I felt like the story was just a tad rushed, like they didn't have the time the book might have spent on explaining and developing a few themes, and some of the characters. Without spoiling it, the ending sort of makes sense, but not quite. The development wasn't quite there so that you believed this would be the only choice for the main character. Probably some missing development that is in the book but didn't make it into the movie so it would be a good running time (which it was), but overall really well done.

It was shot on Red Epic.
