Encore PCM to Dolby transcode

Here's one that I think many Encore users might be interested in...

When I bring a video and audio asset into Encore, (encoded VBR from AME PPRO)

The pcm audio and video are in sync on the Encore timelime.
Then, when I transcode the pcm to Dolby (in Encore) it goes out of sync a few frames.

Question:
Should I just break down and purchase the $ 300 license fee from Adobe PPRO and encode the audio and video file with Dolby from the very begining? (instead of Encore doing it)

Is this a built in BUG with Encore to force us to purchase the Dolby encoder with PPRO???

Am I alone here with this problem? I need this dvd in sync and the Encore dolby simply does not work. A few frames here and there off sync are a major problem down the road.

Has anybody bought the dolby encoder thru PPRO? Does it work? OR is it off sync as well. I can't use PCM because of the size. I need dolby!!! Encore's dolby bites.

I had never had any problem with the Dolby encoder in Encore. However, Encore can have sync issues if the audio is anything but 16bit/48Khz. So, make sure that your Project Settings in PPro are set to 16bit/48Khz, and that all audio you use in PPro are 16bit/48Khz and that you export 16bit/48Khz from PPro. Always use 16bit/48Khz audio in PPro and Encore for best result, ie no sync issues.

Q: If you import the exported PCM file into PPro and place it on the Timeline from where it origns, is that exported PCM in sync with the video? Thats an easy way to find out if the PCM audio itself is out of sync or if the audio becomes out of sync during the Dolby encoding.

Yeah, it's all 16Bit 48K. I think the problem is with the GOP structure. To get AME to encode this film, I had to slice it up into sections and encode each section of the film. I think I sliced up nested sequences and screwed up the cadence of the GOP.
I'm going to retry and only cut at the end and start of each sequence so nothing is interupted.

I can't get AME to encode any sequence over 15 to 18 minutes. Very difficult situation. I've got 20 small encoded sequences all strung together in the Encore timeline, some in sync, others not.

- Can you render out anything out off PPro without interruption?
- Have you tried to render out DV-avi's instead of mpeg's?

I prefer to render out DV-avi's and import them into Encore and let Encore transcode them. AME is soooooo slow and you will save a lot of time if Encore do the transcoding for you. And, your problem may be solved if you can render out DV-avi's without interruption. :)

exporting DV AVI from PPRO and having encore encode it doesn't look very good. It get's a little ghosty during any movement.

The AME is a decent encoder, but I just don't know how to get things in sync with encore.

I'll have a long sequence, I'll cut it in half, then AME encodes both, then I bring them into Encore and place them both on the time line, and when I burn them, there is a jump between the 2 scenes. I've tried CBR and VBR , both low around 6.

Does this have something to do with the GOP??

Thanks for your time..... I've spent over 2 weeks on this thing and am ready to blow my brains out.

by the way.... the flic is 134 mins, using a DL dvd.

encoded each of the 20 sequences @ VBR 5/5.8/6.5 max and using dolby.

Are you using progressive or interlaced footage?

/Roger

progressive....

I'm going to try exporting again... maybe my settings were off?

DV AVI and for the video compressor, do I select DV 24p Advanced or just NTSC? I'll try both....

I know the footage was 24 pa so I guess that's the one I should select?

I'll try a few clips and see if Encore can encode them better ..... maybe without the GOP headers from PPRO, encore can sew up the clips better?

Getting better!!

I tried AVI export from PPRO with NO compression.... the file is huge!! but when I exported into encore, I got clean results.

Question:

What is the "auto" trancoding settings for encore? Is it VBR or CBR or who knows....? there is no mention of the settings in the book or in the program.

I set the max bit rate for importing assests at 6 mbps. The original footage is mini dv, so I can't see the difference with any higher bit settings. The lower the better I heard for more dvd compatibility.

I'm making a dlt master for this dual layer deal. I heard I need 2 dlt tapes, one for each layer. Does encore tell me when to put in the 2nd tape? or do I have to cut the project into 2 projects???

my consufion never ends.....

Thanks for your help!

Best,
Darryl

Well.... the encore encoding is not as good as PPRO AME.

Encore is still a little bit jerky. AME is very smooth.

So, now I'm back to the main problem.

Exporting a 10 min clip from AME and having the video and audio file be exact in sync on the encore timeline.

Even the pcm is out of frame a bit.

Nothing lines up exactly in frame in encore.

I"ll try exporting my 24 f to 30 frame before encore gets it.

I'll keep trying.

nothing working.

Anybody have any advice????

Only AVI files are in perfect sync when imported into Encore.

BUT, Encore's encoding sucks. AME's is much better.

NOW WHAT???

Where's my gun.

FYI, PPro and Encore DVD uses the very same encoder, Adobe Media Encoder. There is a Preset for progressive footage in Encore DVD, have you tried it?

Try to import the .avi into Encore DVD and right click on the .avi and choose Transcode Settings > NTSC Progressive High quality 7MB VBR 2 Pass. If you want to edit any Preset in Encore, go to File > Transcode > Edit Project Transcode Presets.

I'm on it.... the same encoder??? That would be great.... hope it works. Been up all night trying every combo in the world.

Any tips on the export of the avi to start with?

DV AVI / 24 p or 30? de interlace? avi no codec... there are so many... I'm on my 6th right now....

I'll back tomorrow.... it's 6 am here, and I'm beat.

Thanks so much, I'll try the different versions of the avi export from ppro and encode them in encore.

Hell, you might get your name in the credits!
Thank you !

I am working with interlaced PAL media only, so i have no experience with exporting/export settings with progressive 24P footage. But since the footage is 24p it should be output as 24p from PPro for best results. Someone with more experience with 24p footage might chime in with a better answer than mine! :)

However, i have experience of trying different export settings and instead of render out the whole movie, use the Work Area Bar in PPro and render out lets say only 10-20 seconds of the footage. Then, burn all files on the same DVD and take a look at the clips at the same time to find out wich one looks best. This saves you render times in PPro, transcoding times in Encore and burning times in Encore. I have had DVD's with 30 small clips on it just to find out wich clip/export settings that looks best. :)

The Work Area Bar is indeed very powerful and a huge time saver when testing things like export settings in PPro. :)

Thanks again Roger.... The best output from Adobe so far was DVAVI 24p progressive ,however the final footage is still a little ghosty. I tried regular AV 30 frame encoding with no codec, it's a large file, that one was more ghosty. I'll keep trying.
