Encore Compatibility

Hey all-

I have used ENCORE once. I used it with my sisters wedding video. I got it to work, with menus on my DVD player, no problem. But, I have an el-cheapo DIVX player which seems to work with ANYTHING. I love it but I digress...

She said that she couldn't get it to work on her parent-in-laws DVD player or their X-BOX. And when I tried it out, I got it to work on many stand alone DVD players but it would fail on a quite a few others....

This is not a good ratio. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this...a lack of compatibility? And if so or if not, does anyone have a thought as to what it might be? I am using MAXELL PRINTABLE DVDs...

Could it be the media? Or does anyone think it could be the way I am exporting it to DVD from ENCORE? If that is the case...any settings suggestions?

Thanks a lot all-
Rick

Rick,
I would take a look at the media you are using and your burning technique. AFAIK, Maxell is not a bad brand but they don't make all their own media. The best way to find out who made it is by the media code that's embedded on the disc. You need a program to read it. I use DvdInfoPro(.com). There's a free download version of the program. With that you can find out more info on the media.

As far as burning, I recommend that you burn at half the rated speed of your media. So if it's 8x media, burn it at 4x speed. If it's 16x, burn at 8x, etc. DvdInfoPro also contains a tool for scanning the entire burned DVD for bad sectors.

Finally, although it's becoming less of a problem, some DVD players just don't like burned DVDs. It's a bit ironic but I've found the more expensive players are often the pickiest. Also, I have had the best success with DVD-Rs.

Thanks for the info Dan...

I to stick with only DVD-Rs. But I'm confused as to why I am having a problem...as I've said, my DIVX player reads everything and it was only $50.00 bucks. I just think that player is giving me a bad sense of security because, as you said, more expensive players seem to be soooo picky.

The last batch of DVDs that I printed for her were at half speed but shes still having problems and had to watch her wedding video on her computer. Not what I intended. They have a beautiful big widescreen TV...thats where they should be viewing it. Aside from suggesting they get a DIVX player (which I have many times) I'm stumped...

I will download that software. It seems like it could help...

Thanks again....

I can't explain why high-end DVD players seem to be more finicky. Just something I've observed. Even then, it seems that you are having more trouble than you should. I would try switching media and/or a different DVD burner if you have one. -Dan

Hmmm....well, I can't switch DVD burners because its in my computer, its a Plextor, I love it...and I don't think its doing me wrong.

I'm thinking that its the WAY I'm exporting to DVD from ENCORE. I could be wrong, but I have a funny feeling that might be it....

i had issues through encore as well. any still-frame moments in my videos (like titles) would flash by in a second and then act all funny... it did this when i previewed the file in encore as well. -- anyways, as far as your problem... i think it all comes down to the dvd player. unfortunately dvd-r's are not playable in every single dvd player known to man... it's basically a long shot with every project.

teledan gave you some good advice.

Yeah, I think you are correct. I have since purchased some VERBATIM brand media...I think I will switch to that....see if that helps...
