Encore 24p DVD

Is it possible to create a 24p dvd in encore, i dont wantt o do a 24p normal pulldown i want the dvd player to do it so that i can have more space to work with on the dvd. I see that i can change the gop settings and change it from 15 to 12 (half of 24) but the actually frame rate setting seems ot be permanent, anyone able to do it. I have dvd lab pro but i dont know how to use it yet and would rather see if encore is able to do this.

Encore can handle it just fine. I export my mpeg assets from Premiere with Adobe media encoder at 23.976, progressive, default gop settings. Pull them into Encore and author as normal. Ignore what Encore reports as the asset framerate.

Unless there is varification otherwise by encore, i cant really trust that its not just doing a pulldown with that 24p footage i know it will handle the file but i dont want it to think its 29.97 and give me les disk space.

As long as your encoder settings include the correct GOP (Group of Pictures) sequence, then the flag for repeat frame will have been properly inserted. This will give you a true 24 frame DVD with the size savings that result. I have done this numerous times and tested the resultant file size to confirm that it is a "true 24p", it works correctly every time.

If you are really trying to push the quality up, then don't multiplex your audio and video, instead get separate .m2v & .wav files, then use Encore to do the conversion to .ac3. This allows you to push the .m2v data rate to near its upper limits (about 9 Mb/s).

ok it seems like you guys know what you are talking about, sorry for the skepticism. is corrects GOP the numbers it will automatically import with or do i have to change it from 15 to 12 and from 3 to something else like 2?

You can have your M & N frames rate set to any integer of the frame rate (24 in this discussion), but setting M to 3 and N to 12 will give you correct results. This will correctly cause a repeat of the bi-directional frames (B frames) when played back allowing a 24 frame GOP structure to translate into a 29.97 NTSC frame rate. If you fully understand the consequences of modifying the GOP structure, then you can adjust both the Predictive (P frames) and Bi-directional (B frames) relationship to the Intracoded (I frames) ones to best suit the material that you are encoding. For more information look at the DVD-V "book" (assuming that you are a licensee) for additional information on the GOP requirements.

I am still a little worried about getting the full space out of my 24P DVD and i will tell you why. In the Encore help files it says "Because the frame rate doesn't conform to NTSC standards, Adobe Encore DVD must transcode 23.976, 23.98, or 24 fps footage files upon import. When you import files with these frame rates, Adobe Encore DVD prompts you to choose an appropriate transcoding preset. By default, the program transcodes the files internally at 24 fps (to save disc space and maintain quality) but tags them to be played back at 29.97 fps, as required by the DVD specification" THe only problem is that when i imported my AVI file it does not ask me to transcode and i have to set the transcode settings manually so i am afraid encore is reading this file that i imported at 29.97 especially becasue it doesnt say it sees it otherwise. I am sure i exported the file using premiere pro's 24p advanced export settings so that file should be fine. I have my bitrate set as 2 pass variable 4 min 4.25 mid and 4.5 max and the file is 2 hours and 6 mintues long. If i were to inport a file at that length that i know to be 29.97 i would get the same encoded file size whihc is a little under 4.6 gigs since its the same bitrate per second the only difrence is that each frame in that second wil be getting more of that bitrate per second in teh 24p file but i have no way of checking. Does encore ask any of you to transcode there 24p files on import or is it normal that it doesnt even though the help files tell me it should?

That help file can be confusing. I always encode my mpeg assets first before importing into Encore instead of letting Encore handle transcoding chores from AVI's. Is that an option for you?

A properly encoded 24p mpeg file should not require any transcoding in Encore. It has to do with the way the mpeg files are flagged when they are encoded, prior to authoring. In a sense, the flag fools Encore so that it doesn't transcode. The file remains 24p (broken into smaller pieces with a VOB extension) and your DVD player then inserts the 3:2 pulldown on the fly for playback to meet the 29.97 NTSC standard.

If you are exporting 24pa avi's for Encore (which are 29.97 clips because of the 3:2 pulldown added) then I imagine that's why it doesn't report the need to transcode. Doesn't mean it's not processing the file the way you want.

yeah .. encoding to 24p through PPRO stays as 24p in encore,..(if encore is transcoding it.. select "dont transcode" so it doesnt conform it to the project preset.) and uses less disk space.. the dvd player wil automatically add telecine to 29.976 if its set to play on an interlaced set.. for a pogressive dvd player that is set to play to a progressive dipslay.. i will show true 24p off disc.
