Encoding for HDTV

Hi guys,

I've recently bought an HDTV and a Multimedia hard disk to play my stuff and I'd like to know what is the best format compression to get the best image without extremely huge files and rendering times. I mean, I've tried exporting a 2 hour 1080p project to 720p with Adobe Media Encoder, using H264 and the estimated rendering time was something like 38 hours...and I have quad core with 4gb ram!
I want it to look good, otherwise it defeats the purpose of actually having an hdtv, but I also want to be practical. There's got to be faster ways to get this done. Any thoughts?

cheers,

Rafa

LOL!

Rawfa, there is a reason the film guys go to places like EFilm and others that have render farms when they want to render out their 2k DI. They are using a dozen or more machines like yours in parallel to get reasonable speed out of them. Did you happen to estimate the time it would take to output a 1080p final? Where the computer doesn't have to recompute and redraw every single frame of data BEFORE it encodes it...

Quality takes time my friend. Especially on long form projects. And .264 isn't easy to encode either.

Any other format or application that could maybe do a good job while being moderately fast?

I'd also be interested in something that can "re-encode" different formats into different formats, as my multimedia player hard disk cannot handle DTS I find my self being force to re-encode avi, mkv, vob, iso with a different sound format...but I have the same issue here. I need a good encoder/format. I've heard good things about TMPGEnc

I've tried a copy of TMPGEnc and it does an amazing job. I've tested with a copy of Spiderman III that a friend of mine landed me and it took like 5 hours to re-encode it to AVI (xvid) with mp3 sound. The result looks incredibly amazing but the sound seems to be a tiny bit out of sync. I converted from dts to mp3...should I be converting to a more compatible sound format???

TmpGEnc is good. I use Virtualdub which is also VERY fast when I have to do long form encodes to AVI files. But that is usually only at the beginning of my workflow. AVI is not a finishing format, so I rarely use virtual dub late in the process.

Audio getting out of sync is a common problem when transcoding. Hopefully someone here is familiar enough with your workflow to give you some good advice.
