Emulating film "effects"

Ok, we had enough about the "film look", what I want to know is how do we emulate "film effects".

Many of these effects are commonly used in Music Videos, but I wanted to learn how to do them with a digital camera and using Final Cut Studio 2.

For instance, that look some 60's documentaries have when they cut reels together and the screen "flashes" a bit. Doing this with a white frame in FCP doesn't cut it for me.

Another: Super 8 video. Is there a plug-in for Motion or FCP that emulates this effect?

Also, those "Stan Brakhage" stains and flickering on the image, but I'd guess you'd have to be pretty good at After Effects to make it convincing.

The point is, I want to make HD video "dirtier". =p

You can purchase film burns and flashes from places online like artbeats and such, but normally they are expensive. You could also just shoot a roll of 100ft. 16mm, get it telecined and for about $70-100 have your own personal 2 minutes collection. Nothing is going to beat the real thing.

For the flashes, you're looking at maybe an additive dissolve, or you can try different blending modes in After Effects until you get what you want. Magic Bullet has a nice plug-in, too. Plus it will automate frame jitter, dust, scratches, flicker, etc. Doing those by hand is a pain in the butt. I do the 70's-style tint coming and going by hand in After Effects, but it helps to start with a nice image that you can squeeze some latitude out of.
