Empire of Dreams

Did anyone see "Empire of Dreams" on A&E last night? I have a totally different take on George Lucas now. The discussion regarding his dislike and avoidance of Hollywood influence was very interesting to me as well as the finance, etc issues.

The documentary is going to be part of the new DVD box set that’s coming out. It also goes into why he added so much new digital footage (he wanted a lot of this in the original but the technology / resources didn’t exist, he actually felt that the original fall far flat of his vision from what I gathered with the exception of the music. The cantina scene in particular).

It was funny hearing David Prowse doing the Darth Vader voice during the filming. Also, Chewbacca actually doing lines. And, I didn’t realize that Steven Spielberg was Lucas’ first choice to direct “Return of the Jedi”. George had quit the Directors Guild and MPAA over a dispute regarding Empire and couldn’t hire him.

Just tons of interesting stuff.

I watched this and loved it. I thought I had 'seen it all' in regards to the Making of Star Wars but learned alot of new facts about it. KURT RUSSEL auditioning for Han Solo's part? That was awesome (I actually think he could have pulled it off). It reminded me of why I ove filmmaking in he first place and brought back some nice childhood memories.

Re: Empire of Dreams

you mean you guys didn't know any of this? and still posted a George Lucas Sucketh Post? that's sad! I knew all this beforehand, and thus respected his vision.
buuut.. yeah, still shouldn't have added stuff to the old one. it just seems....silly. especially when the footage don't match.

He still sucks. His suckedness started right around the time the little Ewok called Wicket showed up.

Re: Empire of Dreams

I'm sorry but I don't believe any of this "I didn't get to achieve my original vision" propaganda.

The case and point is the Greedo scene

Original : Han shoots Greedo without warning. (Thus setting up his rogue character)

1990's Reissue: Greedo shoots first, Han fires back.

2004 DVD's: Greedo and Han shoot at the same time.

What exactly stopped George from achieving Greedo shooting first if that was his oringinal intention.

Then why do they shoot together now.

Because there was fan outrage at this scene. Lucas could not admit that he screwed up, so now changes the scene again in a hope to appease, but without claiming any liability.

Lucas is just tinkering with his film for lack the sake of it. How do any of the new additions benefit the story?

George is a great man in terms that he did change the world and the face of movies. He is an innovator of new technoligies. Thank god for George Lucas. But the man should not be allowed to access his old movies.

:)

Re: Empire of Dreams

yeah dude think about peter jackson and LOTR. I mean i know there was a time when he was just to much of a nobody for anyone to care, but besides that, he held of even thinking of doing LOTR because the was no possible way to achive his vision. When technology came around he decided hey, i should get on this!

Lucas pioneered so much new sfx technology and im glad he made star wars, but he made it and its done, im not one of these die hard "done mess with the art" guys, he can do what he wants, but i do think its stupid. He should have devoted that energy to maybe making NEW films and letting stars wars keep its dignity. I mean look around, i know its blasphamy, but star wars is far more of a joke now then it was pre '99.

Re: Empire of Dreams

He should package the remakes with the Original cuts, and have the ones he tinkered with be the directors cuts.

Re: Empire of Dreams

This crap that Lucas is pulling is the same thing as ET's absurd walkie talkies. Hey, heres an idea! Lets go back to the original 'Terminator' and add a bunch of CGI to it. I mean those 80's low budget effects are kinf of lame afterall. Why were at it, why dont we CGI in the shark in JAWS? I mean that rubbery thing they all Bruce looks ridiculous. ****, now that I think about it, if TURNER is gonna re-color everything, we might as well have GEORGE CGI everything. The original DRACULA has a real bad animated BAT scene that needs repair.

Re: Empire of Dreams

Im with you John, we could do some wild stuff with the twister in Wizard of Oz. And CG flying monkeys. excellent.
