Seriously guys, I'm sorry to post this like this but i'm freaking out!:crybaby:
I have one more day to burn a dvd of my short and send it to Sundance. I already paid and submitted the aplication, but now I cant burn the stupid DVD!

I tried using the search, but i'm so incompetent when it comes to that thing that I end up having to search through the search for 2 hrs and i dont have the time!

Problems: I have FC Studio, but DVD pro wont reckognize the formats I've made the movie into, I tried H.256 (I think thats the name) and HDV 1080i60.
First of all, they look reaaaaaaaalllyyyy bad. Horrible dosent even describe how bad it looks, but that wasnt the case before exporting to these formats.

And second and most importantly, I cant burn any of it as a movie to disc on the mac, only as a data file, so i put them on a dvd and tried it on my PC, but Nero and Moviemaker are saying to me, "What are chou talking about chou silly, silly man!"

I tried iDVD but it says to use a DVD-R and all I have are DVD+r so i'm gonna get some in the morning and hope to god it works, still, i'd like a better solution. And someone pleeeease tell me why all my beautiful DVX footage looks like a cow masticated it and put it on display on an old console tv with a blown tube?! AHHHHHH!!!:Drogar-Smoke(DBG): :(

OK, any help at all would be sooooo greatly appreciated, please, please, please help me,
thanks everyone before hand
A distraught DVXuser:zombie_smiley:

thank you for your quick response malcolm, i'll go try that out right now.. is that the normal way to do it? do you know what settings? (deep breaths)
it takes about 6hrs to render but i dont care as long as it works, be back in a sec (trips and falls as he runs to the mac)

Hey....

Are you using compressor?

Click on the sequence in FCP and export using compressor.

Use the Setting

DVD Fastest Encode 90 Mins 16:9 (that is if it is anamophic)

Now, I'm not sure if you are using HDV if that'll mess it up.
The SURE fire way to do it would be to export it as NTSC DV 48KHZ to your desktop.
Then preview THAT file. If that looks good (it should look nice and crisp) Import that into Compressor (drag it on in) and compress using the setting above.

Hope that helps!

Good luck getting in!

Edit: thanks colione I wrote this before seeing your post. Would you be able to tell me what compressor is doing exactly and how it works? Either way thanks a mil hopefully this works. Do i just run it through DVD pro after wards?

Original post: I redid my search and I want to know, what the hell is compressor? I have it but i dont know how to use it.
Sundance says something about playing in HDcam 1080i60, but i wasnt sure if this means me or not.
I shot in 24pa with the letterbox, then i exported it hdv 1080i60, but am i wrong in doing this? besides avi (which i have exporting now) should i be using compressor? and if so what are the steps since i am clueless about any of that stuff.
Just goes to show you kids, learn all the functions of your software not just the stuff you might think are important.

Lol, wow, what are the chances of me posting and recieving an answer before submitting the question... thanks so much colione, i'm gonna go try that right now.

Hey GlimmerGhost, any luck? I Just read your thread and had initial troubles when I was using FCP and DVDPro. I can MAYBE help. But if you shot this in HD then I am probably usless.

I'll check back here and see how you're doing.

Good luck man... on getting it submitted AND at Sundance!

Ted

Ha! wow, you helped me more than you know. something yo said made me go back to sundance page and read the requirements and it says just that, IF (a big if) you have an HD movie put it in hdv 1080i60....... my movie isnt HD:Drogar-Dum(DBG):

I feel like a complete bafoon now but it was 5 am when i started so i'll blame it on lack of sleep. So what i'm doing now is exporting it through compressor. Now compressor must be a way to compress footage, but i seriously have no clue what coompresor really is in all its detail. do i use it to send the movie to DVD pro? will it export into a quicktime movie or will it come out as something different or what?

I exported it as best quality 90 minutes 4:3, is this right? also it asks me about sound, i was gonna put it down for dolby but went with mpeg-2, is this correct? just when when i thought i was catching on.:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

compressor is used to make mpeg-2 and other formats of compressed video. you want to output mpeg-2 files if you are going to dvd. assuming your video is between 60 and 90 minutes, sounds like you did the right thing. i'd recommend reading the compressor manual after your finished and have gotten some sleep. that way you'll be much more comfortable doing this the next time. i'd also recommend outputting your sound dolby encoded. this makes the overall bitrate of your video lower and more likely to play smoothly on all players.

cheers.

you got to love this place and its membership, I swear if I was dying of a heart attack and my wife asked me what to do i'd tell her to go to the DVXuser forum and ask... hopefully someone here has worked on an ER type project.

Anyway, Idont have any manuals for my FCS, it came with the discs and thats it.
Ebay.
"Don't ask any questions, I wont tell you any lies."

You should probably back up and export as Dolby. MPEG-2 audio isn't compatible with all DVD players.

Thanks, thats exactly what i'll do. Anything to make sure this goes smoothly.
As soon as it's on dvd i'll come back and post the trailer. And then its off to sundance!

hey, what am i looking for when it gets out of compressor?
I'm looking for some type of file to run through dvd pro to no avail, whats it supposed to look like?

It should spit out an .m2v file and an .ac3 file. Then you can import those into DVDStudioPro.

Glimmerghost, I am glad that you got over that one hurdle.

As for Compressor, there SHOULD be a manual in your program under the help menu.

I have tried using it (last December) and don't remember my outcome. I do remember being completely overwelmed by it.

Try googling exactly what you are trying to do. It is amazing the stuff that pops up. Also, there are some GREAT links to FCP sites under the NLE forum on this site (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=14).

I have to agree with bewillia about the bitrate. Watch that sucker! I've had more trouble with that then I care to recall!

Good luck, I'll keep checking in.

Ted

You guys have been a true blessing, Malcolm, theaterguy, bewillia, colione and krestofre and anyone else who helped or will help in my time of need... my hat is off to you gents.

I'll save you some time . . . CALL 911 !!!

Great thread. Glad folks were up and posting during your crisis!

the 1080i requirement is for screening at sundance - to submit ALL films must be on a dvd in normal dvd format -

Just wanted to clarify - so that means they do not see the HD footage for the submission from those who shot that way
