EMERGENCY!!! HELP!!! Export Problems!!! FCP!!!

Ok I just got done editing my first DVD. It's been a hassle from the beginning because I ran out of storage space on my start up disk while I was capturing the footage to my computer, so I finished capturing the rest of my footage onto my external hard drive. I also set all my scratch disks to my external HD because my start up HD had very little memory left.
I finished editing my DVD and it is about 50 minutes long, I usually edit music videos and have never had to deal with editing and rendering this large amount of footage. After completing all my editing I then attempted to export my file to my hard drive which had about 278GB left on it. After about 5 hours my Final Cut began to pause and then eventually failed to continue exporting because of lack of space on my start up HD, however I was exporting to my external. I deleted files that I was not using off my start up HD and only have about 2 GB available. Sooo...does anyone know how I can manage to export my file safely without having to add more storage space to my mac? Could I use Compressor? Please any information is appreciated. Thanks.

This is a stab in the dark:

Try making a QT reference file, onto your external, and then manually compress that file with Compressor.
