Eliminating Letterboxing

Hi,

I shot a film with a Panasonic DVX 100B, using 16:9 letterbox mode. I know that this only gives a simulated 16:9 image (by adding black bars above and below the otherwise 4:3 image.

I've imported the film into Final Cut Express, and then out to a Quicktime movie for use with iDVD. Is there a way to do this so that the exported film (i.e. the final DVD) does not have those black bars? In other words, can they somehow be cropped out, or reformated in FCE so that all I have is the 16:9 image?

Thanks for all your help.

I think the only way around your problem is to crop it in final cut pro. Using in camera letter box is a horrible idea because you are burning it right into the tape. But if you crop it then zoom you will loose quality. Your better off just keeping it the same.

Yup- you'd have to drop it into a 16:9 anamorphic timeline and then increase your scale and aspect ratio sliders to fill the screen= reduced image quality. Also you'll likely wind up cropping away part of your image to fill the frame.
