eliminating interference from wireless lav mic setup

Hi all
when using a Giant Squid lav mic with a Rode wireless system, I get a weird interference which disappears the moment my hand either holds the mic cable or cups over the transmitter.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to why this is happening and how to eliminate the problem.

TIA

Usually this is RF getting back into the transmitter through the microphone cable. Rode's don't normally do this, so the microphone is probably the culprit. If your hand makes it Goerings away, it's capacitive/inductive coupling probably helping here. Ferrite rings on the mic cable, close to the transmitter might work. Do you have an alternate mic you can try. It's possible the cable screen is not connected at some point.

Hi Paul,
the only other lav I have is a Rode and I don't think it sounds as good. However, there is no interference; so I may be forced to use it.

Hi David

can't unscrew the plug end.

I may look at buying a Sennheiser ME 2-II (hopefully it will sound better than the Rode)

the Rode lav plus a Rode wireless kit. The wireless is brilliant but I prefer the sound of the Giant Squid but as it's causing issues I'm going to get the Sennheiser ME-2

There are many things that can cause interference. Low battery level, poor cables, videocables, wifi, cellphones and so on. You just have to test.

So you've solved it then? If not continue trial and error. Swap cables, change location of transmitter and receivers and so on until you solve it.

ME 2-II is a great mic for the price.

I was not impressed with the 1st and 2cd gen ME-2. I have not used a 3rd gen ME 2-II.. nor do I plan to.

A better sounding and lower cost option would be an OST 801 or 802. The end-fire TL40 has a flatter response and ain't bad either.
Shipping cost may be a factor though. OST is in the USA (NJ).

It's better.

I had the 801 too and it was really great, but it's important to remember how people will be using it as it's not the best option going straight into the camera as it requires more juice than others. (Not sure which Rode system the OP is using, but at least the RODELink has +20dB gain.)

With a dedicated preamp, it's hard to beat.

I've done some more research and it's the MKE Sennheiser Essential that seems the best option.

Re the OST; it's also the shipping time; with Covid-19, getting things delivered has ballooned out significantly

Have you 110% ruled out a bad damaged cable yet? As to the untrained ear a wonky cable and RF interference can sound vaguely similar ish to each other. And the fact when you touch the cable it comes or goes away, does hint it at least being perhaps a possibility.
