Electro Voice 635

I've inherited a EV 635 mic that is supposedly good for hand-held interviews, which I can't see me doing.

Right now I'm using primarily a shotgun on a boom to do sound for a number of shorts that friends are doing.

I'd like to use this mike for something, but I don't know what.

Is it good for anything other than ENG?

You mean a 635A, right, not a 635? The "A" is the classic small handheld "stick" mic, and there are probably millions in circulation, while the original 635 was more of a "bullet" shape with a permanently attached stand mount/pistol grip, much larger, and always had a shiny metallic finish AFAIK. The latter are fairly rare and would have some value in the collector's market. They're also considered very good for recording harmonica. The 635A is a very good sounding mic for close-up vocals, but being omnidirectional, works best in a quiet room and is a total non-starter if you can't allow the microphone to be seen in the shot. Still, I wouldn't get rid of it -- like Gregg says, sooner or later you'll run into a situation where it will be exactly what you need.

See http://bluesmics.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=51 for pictures of the original 635.
