Efficient Editing?

Are there any websites/guides/books regarding the standard method of editing? I edit on my own pace and in my own style, but I don't know if this is what I should keep doing if I want to start editing more efficiently.

Ah... well, I edit on Premiere and Avid, but I was just wondering if there are any universal standards that all editors on all NLEs use.

The program usually dictates the pace and how you are going to approach it. Everyone has a different style -it's an art form, so anything goes style wise as there is no standard - there are tools and features that help you access the footage when you need it in order to find the right shot, performance, beat... but it is up to you to know when to cut away, cut in, or not cut at all...

I would suggest tutorials as well to make your own process speedier, keyboard shortcuts play a big part in that, as well as intimately knowing what each editing tool does.

MichaelP, thanks for saying that it is an artform, I was working freelance for a company once that basically told me they wanted me to find a way to phase out my own job, so that they could package the entire system, so that anyone could edit their videos together. And although their stuff wasn't narrative, it was still pretty offensive to me.

Wow... that's pretty harsh to think that programs will edit themselves... They probably could but it would be something no one would watch. Editing is called the invisible art for a reason - since it is meant to be seamless and let everything in the story come forward.
