Effects to help exposure

I know very little about Premier Pro, does anyone have any suggestions on effects and adjustments I can use to effectively brighten up the talent in this interview? I've poked around with brightness, contrast and rgb adjustments, but I just can't get the image looking good.

try gamma & also color correction might be useful. But it looks like you shot it way underexposed.

yeah, it's turbo underexposed, now all I can do is try to fix it as best as Premier Pro can which is why I appreciate any suggestions

Well you may not have actually screwed yourself as much as you think. The digital medium, dispite its limited dynamic latitude, does have a knack for maintaining detail in the shadow areas better than it can in the highlights. Looking at the image, you have definitely exposed well for the highlights (clouds/sky), but by doing so, have left your subject in the dark. Something to remember, in photography it's best to try to obtaining proper exposure on what is most important within your frame. A quick fix for this exposure nightmare would have been to use a simple white board, or reflector while shooting, to give your subject some fill light and thereby reducing that nasty contrast problem. Now back to your sample, without spending a whole lot of time on the image, I was able to import this still into Premiere Pro and adjust the shadow regions to a more appropriate level without changing the overall exposure in the highlights. With the exception of the artifacts from what looks like the type of compression you used to create the still, I would say this would be a more accepted image than the previous. By the way, this was achieved simply by applying a shadow/highlight video effect, and an auto levels correction filter. Let me know if you need any additional help.

PS: Watch the headroom on your subjects when composing a shot, unless of course you added the letterbox in post, in which I would recommend you adjust the video position and then apply the letterbox.
