effects not working?

hello,
I am working on a project in vegas 5, and I want to use some effects, but none of them seem to be working.I have tried just about all of the effects, from magic bullet to sony light rays, the window for adjusting your effects pop up, but when I move the slider to make adjustments, nothing is happening.Any ideas?

Do you have the "Bypass FX button" above the preview window pressed?

all these little quirks I am still adjusting to.Didn't realize I had it on.

What's going to be worse is when you drop an effect on your preview window and can't figure out why suddenly it affects all of your footage.

yes i did find that out the hard way as well. No big deal, the only way I learn is by doing it anyway.
