Edius, P2, Help!!

Hi all

I have been working a substantial project off of a Demo version of Edius. It was clearly the only solution to the P2 workflow after using Avid and PPro for the past 6 years. My project is due tomorrow (when I planned on purchasing the darn program) and now the Demo will not see my P2 media. I am so very deeply in trouble.

(If anyone wishes to chastise me for embarking on a project with a Demo NLE, you have every right to, I would!. Just hold off until I get through tomorrow's proofing please)

The typical error that others have found here on the forum now come up. Illegal system request or Hardware not supported.

I installed the demo on another system, it brings up this monster of a project, but the second I try to render it, or mess around in the timeline, It crashes. The project is mixed DV50 P2 and Uncompressed AVI. I imported the P2 XML files into Edius from the P2 folders. It has worked like a charm.

Why this demo even uses P2 is beyond me. According to what I read here on the forum, it isnt supposed to. I can tell you mine worked fine for 14 hours a day, for the past week and a half.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I will grovel at feet and sing songs of praise if needed.

PM me or even Call, 440-645-TAPE. I will return the call on my dime.

Sorry, there's not enough information there to give you an answer to your problem. Your best bet may be to pursue this in the official Edius forum, or contact Canopus/Grass Valley tech support.

On a different note, the demo version of Edius does officially support P2, so you should expect it to work.

I do understand, that was pretty scatterbrained. The whole project was done up under DVCPro50 Preset. Most of the P2 media was imported VIA the XML data clips in the P2 offloaded folders. Others were a variety of AVI formats, Uncompressed RGBA AVI, some under the Canopus lossless, ETC.

I dont know if it helps, but when I try to open either the last version, or the Trimmed Project version I made, It comes up just fine. The second I do anything in the timeline, I get an Error message and It crashes. I cannot render it, export it, even breath on it, Nothing. I have tried some other test edits and everything works OK. There is something with this particular project that is messing up. I will say there are 12 Video Tracks. Only about 5 of them actually have consistant content throughout the project, but there is a sequence at the opening that required a ton of Video Tracks.

There is a V4.52 update that was just released (like, in the last 24 hours), and it includes fixes that may address your problem. However, I'm not sure whether the V4.52 update can be applied to the trial version -- I think it can, but don't quote me on that.

Aanother thing you may want to try is to open the project, immediately save it under a new name, exit Edius, and open the newly saved version to see if it also crashes.

Got it! I Think I just found a new bug in Edius. I am using an external USB Drive to render everything to and hold all my Data. The drive letter had changed being plugged into the new machine from the old letter of R: to F:. I had to Re-Lable the drive letter so it would play back everything. It was wierd, It saw all the clips, but if I touched them it crashed.

In other NLE's, Once I point out a folder on a new drive, they are quick to adjust to that new drive letter and even path where the source files are retained. Edius apparently does not have this intelligence built in yet. In computers eyes, t saw the clips, but yet did not understand why it could see them until I changed the drive letters. That was a first. (Adobe's DVD 2.0 still has this issue, in that program, if you change drives or folders for an archived project, you are simply dead in the water.

There is a clip restoration dialog that should pop up if any of the files are offline.

Musical chairs with drive letters breaks many a thing.

Whenever possible, keep it the same. Of course when you plug a non-writable drive into a different USB port it usually gets yet another new letter...

This was the strange thing. I did not have to use the Restoration box. It was finding the clips and displayed them all in the bin properly!! However, until I changed the Drive letter to the same letter the project was created under, it kept crashing when I went to play the project, or even touch the timeline.

Like I say, I think I just discovered a new bug never reported before.

Lessons learned,

1. Don't do a major edit on demo software.

2 When working in Edius and using an External Drive, make sure that drive is labeled as the same drive letter you started with, should you transfer your project to another system. It WILL see everything, but it will Crash until you rename the drive letter to the same letter,it was created under at the start of the project. You may have to rename your drive every time you put it in another machine. TIP: I would suggest using something high up the letter ladder like R: S: T: U: ETC to avoid running into the common drive letters like D E F G H you find in some machines.

With that being said, I still think Edius Rocks. It is "hands down" the easiest and most robust P2 NLE to date. It lacks the ability for plug-ins and some other stuff. But that is what the others are there for as far as I am concerned now.
I have worked on Avid and PPro for many years. Until this 1 issue I discovered, Edius ran steady, smooth and very quick, 14 hours a day, for 13 days straight. Not ONE crash or other issue until this. And to think this was just the Demo!

I cannot wait to buy it!

Dave

P.S. I hope this saves someone some serious headaches. I tried the same thing on my laptop, it did EXACTLY the same thing until I renamed the drive letter. It was not an Isolated incident.

Just a quick question re: the demo - Was thinking of trying it out and wondered if it displays some kind of countdown to let you know when it runs out?

Magic Cat, it sounded like you said you were dragging folders from the contents folder into the bin... If so, next time just use the p2 select option under tools. EDIUS will handle everything for you.

jshaw: Everytime you start EDIUS, it tells you how many days are left on the trial. One day ticks off at midnight as far as I could tell.

Later,
Jason

Just a friendly word of caution...

Whatever you do, do not change the date/time on your machine to try to "fool" the demo - it'll immediately expire.
