Editing workstation desk

I found a pretty nice editing desk that I'd like to get. The problem is that it's pretty expensive. Does anyone know of a desk similar to this Winsted for much less than $2200?

this is one of those purchases that seems like a good idea before you get it. after you set up everything, you're like: "what the hell was i thinking, this is just a desk".

A good desk makes all the difference in the world. After the hurricanes about wiped us out in '05, I was forced to resort to using an audio rack cart for a desk, and then I found a small phone table/desk and used that for over a year. After I got fed up with stuff overflowing and no room to work, I shopped around. What I found was Sauder's pressboard crap for $2-300, and nicer desks for much more. Anything designed for editing was close to $1,000 or more.

A couple of trips to Lowes, and a month or two later, I now have a big enough desk to suit me and all my stuff. Of course, that is when all my computers decided to go out at once. Nice desk and nothing to do.

Thanks for the responses guys. Even $1700 is too expensive for this imo. I'm surprised there aren't any cheap alternatives out there for only a few hundred dollars. Even Ikea doesn't have anything like this. This thing seems so simple, yet they want so much money.

Capt Quirk, how did you make one? I don't have the tools/machinery to make one.

I certainly don't want to spend a couple months making a desk. I guess what I'm really looking for is a pre-built solution, or even something that comes with all the pieces that I only need to simply assemble. $500 or less would be ideal.

All that 2$K thing has is a lowered keyboard tray and a shelf.

You can get a lowered keyboard tray with an extended mouse ledge for $40 that will screw under any desk.

I'm sure you can find a shelf, I had dairy crates with a plank at the back of my desk for a while.

I'm sure you can find a desk with a lowered keyboard tray and a shelf for much less than 2K. It might not have that cool crescent shape, but arrange your monitors in an arc and you will have the same work effect if not cosmetic effect.

I would spend my money on a good mesh ergonomic chair. With the Keyboard tray and a adjustable chair you should be able to adjust them both to the right heights for the correct ergonomics. Anything beyond that is cosmetic or unnecessary IMHO.

I have a motorized biomorph desk that raises and lowers the entire worksstation so I can edit sitting down or standing up. as I routinely work 12 hours days as a producer/editor (aka "preditor"), that freedom makes it the best $3000+ i ever spent. I know it sounds expensive but between bay rental and my daily rate, I was able to cover the cost in less than a week.

That sounds nice ... and the editing standing up thing is something that Walter Murch recommends in his book, like editing on an old moviola.

For now I must be content to just make sure my keyboard height is right. I often put in 16 - 20 hours there as my editing station is my DVXuser station, email station, youtube station, etc.

Mike I checked out worldmarket.com and they have tables the size you want for under $500.

Get that under table keyboard tray, two cinder blocks and a plank and call it a day.

Boy I am spending too much time on this ... insomnia is a biotch.

Well, I did some searching and think I came up with a decent solution. I'll buy two of these http://salestores.com/buwc72dumeau.html and put them in an L-shape. I'll mount the two LCD screens slightly above the desk and a 50" calibrated plasma above those. I'll have a 3 seat couch behind me against the wall in the room. That way clients can sit down comfortably while I work and see what I'm doing on the plasma. I can also use the plasma for some color correction and I'll have a surround system for mixing and viewing. The additional desk making the L will be for additional equipment such as printers, decks, a mixer, etc. I think this will be a good start to a decent post room. This will be my first real post room and attempt to do this for some income. How does it sound to you guys? Any suggestions or comments?
