Editing workflow on a network hard drive for multiple systems.....yes or a better sol

Hey, do any of you work on a network hard drive, one that is connected via ethernet to a router?

How do you find it works with your editing if your system was connected directly to the router via another ethernet cable?

And how about wirelessly?

Essentially, I want to share project files amongst 3 different systems in the same room and would like to create a fast and possibly uninterrupted workflow with them (one for basic and final editing, one for special effects, one for audio cleanup/sound and music creation).

A network hard drive is what I have thought about. Does anyone use any other methods that might be better for this situation?

Usually the NAS drives don't have the bandwidth to edit most data rates used in picture editing - especially if HD. If so, they need to be very much compressed long GOP type formats. Wireless would have more issues than connected NAS. Then if you add several system trying to read the same file - you double your problems - seek time, sustaion time in addition to bandwidth to the editing systems.

Alright, so how do I allow 3 systems to read the same file without these problems? What are the techniques used by production houses for this?

in avid land, it's unity. There are still bandwidth issues with it but it's the best thing we have.

Hmm, so I am guessing it would make more sense for these systems to export full 'draft' files for the others to use?

For example, editing system creates an avi of the film for the effects and audio system to use and they grab it from the network hard drive after the editing system puts it there.

Either way, I would need a drive for all systems to communicate with and share content through. Would a network hard drive be the best thing for that? Especially if the other s systems already had their own external hard drives for editing....or would that be wasteful?

You can find smaller configs at lower costs from companies like EditShare etc. If all you are doing is a push/pull - then any server type config will do.

Thanks for the suggestions Micheal. I most likely will do a push/pull system until there is real need for the simulataneous system of Editshare. Which I will most likely factor into a budget when that time comes.
