Editing- workflow between sound design and grading

Hey People,

I'm really stuck on how to navigate the final phase of my first 5-min short and need advice!

The film is edited on native hdv and when the editor tried to export it as a quicktime movie and burn to dvd, it wouldn't play on my pc. What is the process of compressing a hdv-edit to a user friendly format?

2) My sound design guys are working from aiff audio files and are in possession of the video (again, saved as a quicktime movie). It's at this point I'm not sure of where the film should go and how- we have to add the audio, music (composed by a different individual) to video and then provide a mini dv tape for the colour grading.
In what form can I get the audio files, to add to the video (saved on an ext hard drive with editor)?
My editor mentions 'playing out' the sound designers work to a master tape- is this the best way? I'm really unsure how to proceed- does anyone have the lo-down in simple terms, advice or webpage references which may shed more light?

Thanks!

Gill

Somehow I couldn't exactly follow what you are saying but I will give it a try. If you are trying to have your short color corrected by someone else going back to a mini dv tape in hdv format is not the best option and I don't recommend it, but it is the easiest. Here is how I would do it (final cut pro/after effects workflow).
1. export from final cut as a uncompressed quicktime file minus titles and audio.
2. import it into after effects color grade it.
3. Export again as a uncompressed quicktime back into FCP
4. Relink audio and add titles.
5. Export from final cut pro to whatever format you need.

I hope that helped. Also a uncompressed 5 minute short would easily fit on a 100gb external hardrive.
