Editing with still pictures?

I want to edit together some footage from a party along with pictures from said party in the style of a slideshow. Kind of like a documentary on the History channel or something. I don't know how to import the pics or how to adjust them in the timeline so that they only last for certain amounts of time as designated by me. Any thoughts?

Just drag and drop them from the explorer panel to the timeline - jpg and tif I've done, not sure about others, but probably others too. They act just like a still clip. Drag the sides to make them longer and shorter. You can do transitions just the same etc. etc.
