Editing Very Large Files Down to Small Clips Before Importing to FCPX?

I have a few very long files from my GoPro, and I'd like to see if I can cut them into clips before I import them to FCPX. Or use FCPX to cut them down to size, but not have them constantly churning in the background.

I have FCPX and iMovie.

Am I wrong to be concerned that it would be mistake to import these large files into FCPX?

Please forgive my abject ignorance.

^ +1.

Just import the large clip. From there, you can create "sub-clips" by using the favorites feature. In the event browser, highlight the part of the clip that you want "sub-clipped" and click the F key to favorite that range. You can then change the word Favorite to something more meaningful. Repeat for each sub-clip you want. Add your favorites / "sub-clips" to your timeline...

You then still have your one large clip but also every "sub-clip" you want (or don't want in the case of rejecting a clip-range). When you look at your large clip, you will be able to see all the sub-clips you've made by looking at the green (favorites) and red (rejected) lines.

When you import make sure you don´t copy them also. That way it saves disk-space and FCPX works with the referenced native file.

Then as suggested set your ins and outs and make sure to either hit "F" to make them favorites or give them keywords (e.g. jump, crash, overtaking etc).

Check into the manual regarding keywords and favorite ranges. X is very much intended to be used as ways to chop large pieces of media into bite-sized chunks.

Ripple Training's FCP X core video course and my own Media Management in FCP X video course at macProVideo will cover pretty much everything you need to know.
