Editing Trick

I know some basic cuts and just recently messed around with video transition. However, does anyone have suggestions on how or what transition or effect to use for say a scene that has memory flashbacks. Where the screen flashes white almost in a strobing effect.

I also want to make it part of the scene go slow motion in the begining and it picks up normal speed as he snaps right out his flashback. Any suggestions.
I try browsing for this, but it may be something simple I just don't know.

For the memory flash, try setting a solid white image between your two clips. Crossfade the first clip over say, 5 frames of the white, then leave the white for maybe three frames, and then crossfade the last five frames into your next clip. Adjust it to suit your taste.

For the other question, I'd have to really play around some to figure that out.

Another way to accomplish the dream flash effect (here's an example, WMV 17Mb, fast forward to the 3:30 mark):

- Drop a Levels effect on both of your clips
- Drop a Gaussian Blur effect on both of your clips
- Make sure the blur effect is below the levels effect in the list (so it gets calculated after)
- keyframe it so that as you approach the cut (e.g. 12 frames of transition), the blur amount increases from 0 to something like 50.
- over the same time period, keyframe a decrease in "(RGB) White Input Level" (in Levels) from 255 (normal) down to something like 50. This is the only parameter in Levels you need to touch.
- repeat for the clip you're flashing to (only in reverse, ending up after the transition with the normal values of 0 blur amount and 255 white input)
- you may also want to add a 3-frame Cross Dissolve, or dissolve to some white video for a second or so, depending on your needs.

These numbers are just guidelines to get you in the ballpark, play around until you get something you like.

As for that time change - a program like After Effects will let you ramp up your framerate gradually, so you can start in slow motion and smoothly accelerate into normal speed.

Premiere doesn't have this capability. One thing you could do is use the razor tool to chop the clip in half, and then set the speed on the first clip to 50% (make sure you move the second clip out of the way first though to allow the first clip to double in duration).

Play around with different things - for example maybe it looks best to cut the clip in 3 - make the first one 50% speed, the second one 200% speed, and the third one normal.

Especially play with the speeds around your flash edit points, you'll get some cool effects.

Hi Overnighttolondon,

I have a quick question...was the effect done with Premiere or After Effects?

By the way, I think the effect and video was great. I want to copy the effect for a current project.

Cheers, Jon

Flash effect was keyframed in Premiere. After Effects was just used on the compositing scenes, with the sparkles and dream clouds. Jittery motion effect in scenes before the OR came from shooting on a Canon digital SLR still camera.

There's a 720p version on that site if you wanted to check that out too (paperheartfilm.com)
