so ive recently purchased my macbook pro 17inch, and now have a few questions.

1. external hardrive?
which is the best one out there in terms of price & value.
my friend recommended Maxtor because of their 1 y warranty but what else is there? ive used the "search" option and found a lot of praises of Seagate.
what do you think?

2. capturing footage
how bad is it if i used my dvx for capturing? do i "have" to buy another camera to do this job? is there a cheap video deck i could buy?

your help would be much appreciated!

maxtor is a good brand so is western digital there are others but i cant recall any rite now. i wouldnt use the dvx for capturing as far as buying a deck there no cheap ones you could get lucky on a used one but brand new will cost atleast 700 bucks. buy your self a cheap cam with fire wire i bought one at a pawn shop for 100 bucks back in 04 and ive never had probs with it.

I'm using a MBP, as well. I have an OWC Elite AL 500 GB raid -- I think it's under $300 now -- that's treated me well. They' URL is macsales.com.

I also bought a cheap cam, like bilgami suggested, to use for importing. Man, I hate importing.

Best options for a single drive solution:
http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10058
Uses native FW400/800 and/or USB IF on your Macbook

You may want to consider this model for an additional e-sata IF:
http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10894

Best options for a multi-drive, RAID 0/1 or JBOD solution:
http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10847
For increased performance you may want to buy an esata PCI-E card for the Macbook.

I'm in the IT industry and those enclosures are the most reliable solution I could find so far. Really designed for 24/7 continuous operation, come with a tachimetric fan and never get hot.

Cheers

arent lacie products supposed to be the most unreliable brand?

Lacie drives have always been reliable for me--5+ years use. I've only had trouble with Iomega.

i was at apple yesterday and the rep tried to sell me a lacie. i was doubtful.
yours never crashed on you?

I too have had a number of LaCie s with no problems but there are many on the web who say otherwise. I just bought two more 500Gb ones.

does seagate products work well with the macbook pro?

I had a Lacie 500gig HD that I used for my editing on my PowerBook and it worked great until it got stolen. Then i purchaded a Seagate 500gig and it also works really well, but what I like about the Seagate was the $150+ price difference. Fry's has a great deal on the seagates right now I believe.

To solve you capturing problem you could always grab yourself the FS-4 DTE recorder. It's 700 bones but at least never have to go through logging and capturing.
