Editing someone else's shoot

Good day everyone,

I'm faced with a potential problem that hopefully someone has experienced and can offer some advice.

I'm editing a shoot someone else did with a JVC GR-HD1 with Vegas 8 this weekend. I won't get the tape until Friday and I've been told, but haven't found any documentation to support, that the only way to import this footage to Vegas is to use the a GR-HD1 and nothing else.

Is this true? (((desperately hoping it's not)))

Other JVC cameras shooting HDV might be able to read it. But most decks cannot from what I understand. JVC especially I think I've heard tends to use a very proprietary format.
 
I've also had problem with reading JVC tapes, and had to use the same model JVC camera to dump the footage.
